Chapter 3
Wives and Husbands
| 1Likewise, wives, be subject to your own husbands, so that even if some are disobedient to the word, they may be won over without a word by the conduct of their wives, 2as they observe your pure and respectful conduct. 3Your adornment should not be the outward kind—braiding of hair, wearing of gold, or putting on fine clothes— 4but rather the hidden person of the heart, with the imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great value in the sight of God. 5For this is how the holy women of the past, who put their hope in God, used to adorn themselves, being subject to their own husbands, 6just as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him “lord.” You have become her children by doing good and not fearing any intimidation. |
| 7Husbands, likewise, live together according to knowledge, showing honor to the woman as the weaker vessel, since you are also fellow-heirs of the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be hindered. |
Living in Harmony and Suffering for Righteousness
| 8Finally, all of you be like-minded, sympathetic, loving as brothers, tender-hearted, and humble-minded, 9not returning evil for evil or insult for insult, but on the contrary, blessing—for to this you were called, so that you might inherit a blessing. |

ὁ
γάρ
{Psalm 34:12-16} |
|
10For, The one who desires to love life
and to see good days, must keep his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking deceit; 11he must turn away from evil and do good; he must seek peace and pursue it. 12For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and his ears are open to their prayer, but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.” {Psalm 34:12-16} |
| 13And who is the one who will harm you if you become zealots for what is good? 14But even if you should suffer for the sake of righteousness, you are blessed. Do not fear their threats and do not be troubled, 15but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you, 16yet do so with gentleness and respect, keeping a good conscience, so that in the thing for which you are slandered, those who disparage your good conduct in Christ may be put to shame. 17For it is better to suffer for doing good, if God’s will should wish it, than for doing evil. |
Christ’s Victory and Baptism
| 18For Christ also suffered once for all regarding sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, so that He might bring you to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit. 19In the spirit He also went and preached to the spirits in prison, 20who were formerly disobedient when God’s patience waited in the days of Noah while the ark was being built, in which a few—that is, eight souls—were brought safely through water. 21Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you—not the removal of dirt from the flesh, but an appeal to God for a good conscience—through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, 22who is at the right hand of God, having gone into heaven, with angels, authorities, and powers having been subjected to Him. |
