Chapter 2
Growth Through the Word
| 1Therefore, having stripped off all malice and all deceit, hypocrisies, envies, and all slanders, 2like newborn infants, long for the pure, spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow into salvation— 3if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is kind. |
The Living Stone and the Spiritual House
|
4Coming to Him, a living stone—rejected by men but chosen and precious in the sight of God—
5you yourselves also, like living stones, are being built up as a spiritual house for a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
6For it stands in Scripture:
“Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone,
a chosen and precious cornerstone, and the one who believes in Him will never be put to shame.” {Isa. 28:16} |
|
7Therefore, the honor is for you who believe; but for those who do not believe,
“The stone which the builders rejected,
8and,
this very stone has become the head of the corner,” {Psalm 118:22}
“A stone of stumbling
They stumble because they disobey the word, to which they were also appointed.
and a rock of offense.” {Isa. 8:14} |
| 9But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for His own possession, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of the One who called you {Isa. 43:20 (LXX)} out of darkness into His marvelous light; |
|
10who once were “not a people”
but now are the people of God; who had “not received mercy” but now have received mercy. |
Living as Sojourners in Society
| 11Beloved, I urge you as strangers and sojourners to abstain from the fleshly desires which wage war against the soul. 12Keep your conduct among the Gentiles honorable, so that in the very thing they slander you as evildoers, they may, by observing your good works, glorify God on the day of His visitation. |
Honour Authority
| 13Submit yourselves to every human institution for the Lord’s sake, whether to the king as the supreme authority, 14or to governors as those sent by him for the punishment of evildoers and the praise of those who do good. 15For this is the will of God: that by doing good you should silence the ignorance of foolish people. 16Live as free people, yet do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil, but live as bondservants of God. 17Honor everyone. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the king. |
The Example of the Suffering Servant
| 18Servants, be subject to your masters with all respect, not only to those who are good and gentle but also to those who are crooked. 19For this finds favor if, because of consciousness of God, someone endures grief while suffering unjustly. 20For what credit is it if, when you sin and are beaten, you endure it? But if you endure while doing good and suffering, this finds favor with God. |
Christ Is Our Example
| 21For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving behind for you an example, so that you might follow in His footsteps. |
|
22He committed no sin,
nor was deceit found in His mouth. {Isa. 53:9} |
| 23When He was insulted, He did not insult in return; while suffering, He made no threats, but kept entrusting Himself to the One who judges justly. 24He Himself bore our sins in His body on the tree, so that, having died to sins, we might live for righteousness; by His wound you were healed. 25For you were straying like sheep, but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls. |
