Chapter 1
Greeting to the Chosen Sojourners
1Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, to the chosen ones who are sojourning in the Diaspora of Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, 2according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, by the sanctifying work of the Spirit, for obedience and sprinkling with the blood of Jesus Christ: May grace and peace be multiplied to you.
A Living Hope and the Refining of Faith
3Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to His great mercy, He has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4into an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, 5who are being guarded by God’s power through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. 6In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been distressed by various trials, 7so that the proven character of your faith—more precious than gold which perishes though refined by fire—may be found to result in praise, glory, and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. 8Though you have not seen Him, you love Him; though you do not see Him now, by believing in Him you rejoice with an inexpressible and glorious joy, 9obtaining the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls.
The Mystery Longed for by Prophets and Angels
10Concerning this salvation, the prophets who prophesied about the grace intended for you made careful search and inquiry, 11seeking to know what person or time the Spirit of Christ within them was indicating when He predicted the sufferings of Christ and the glories that would follow. 12It was revealed to them that they were serving not themselves but you, regarding the things which have now been announced to you through those who preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven—things into which angels long to look.
A Call to Holy Living
13 Διὸ ἀναζωσάμενοι τὰς ὀσφύας τῆς διανοίας ὑμῶν νήφοντες τελείως ἐλπίσατε ἐπὶ τὴν φερομένην ὑμῖν χάριν ἐν ἀποκαλύψει Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ. 14 ὡς τέκνα ὑπακοῆς μὴ συσχηματιζόμενοι ταῖς πρότερον ἐν τῇ ἀγνοίᾳ ὑμῶν ἐπιθυμίαις 15 ἀλλὰ κατὰ τὸν καλέσαντα ὑμᾶς ἅγιον καὶ αὐτοὶ ἅγιοι ἐν πάσῃ ἀναστροφῇ γενήθητε, 16 διότι γέγραπται [ὅτι] Ἅγιοι ἔσεσθε, ὅτι ἐγὼ ἅγιος [εἰμι]. {Lev. 11:44-45}
13Therefore, having girded up the loins of your mind and staying sober-minded, set your hope completely on the grace being brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. 14As obedient children, do not be conformed to the desires you formerly had in your ignorance, 15but just as the One who called you is holy, you yourselves also be holy in all your conduct, 16because it is written: “You shall be holy, because I am holy.” {Lev. 11:44-45}
17And if you invoke as Father the One who judges impartially according to each person’s work, conduct yourselves with fear during the time of your sojourning. 18For you know that you were ransomed from your futile way of life handed down from your ancestors, not with perishable things like silver or gold, 19but with precious blood, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot—the blood of Christ. 20He was foreknown before the foundation of the world but was revealed in these last times for your sake. 21Through Him you are believers in God, who raised Him from the dead and gave Him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.

22Having purified your souls by your obedience to the truth for a sincere brotherly love, love one another fervently from a pure heart,
23since you have been born again, not of perishable seed but imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God.
24For,
“All flesh is like grass,
And this is the word that was preached as good news to you.
and all its glory like the flower of the grass; the grass withers and the flower falls off, 25but the word of the Lord endures forever.” {Isa. 40:6-8} |
