Chapter 4
Living for the Will of God
| 1Since Christ, therefore, suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves also with the same way of thinking—because the one who has suffered in the flesh has finished with sin— 2so as to live the remaining time in the flesh no longer for human desires, but for the will of God. 3For the time that has passed was sufficient for carrying out the desire of the Gentiles, having lived in sensuality, lusts, drunkenness, carousing, drinking bouts, and lawless idolatries. 4They are surprised that you do not run with them into the same flood of dissipation, and they malign you. 5But they will give an account to the One who stands ready to judge the living and the dead. 6For this is why the gospel was preached even to the dead, so that although they might be judged in the flesh according to human standards, they might live in the spirit according to God’s standards. |

Share the Sufferings of Christ
|
| 7The end of all things is near. Therefore, be clear-minded and sober for the sake of your prayers. 8Above all, maintain a fervent love for one another, because “love covers a multitude of sins.” 9Be hospitable to one another without grumbling. 10As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another as good stewards of God’s varied grace. 11If anyone speaks, let it be as one speaking the oracles of God; if anyone serves, let it be from the strength which God provides, so that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belong the glory and the power forever and ever. Amen. |
Suffering as a Christian
| 12Beloved, do not be surprised by the fiery ordeal among you that is happening to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. 13But to the degree that you share in the sufferings of Christ, keep on rejoicing, so that you may also rejoice and exult at the revelation of His glory. 14If you are insulted for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you. 15For let none of you suffer as a murderer, or a thief, or an evildoer, or as a meddler. 16But if one suffers as a “Christian,” let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God in this name. 17For it is time for judgment to begin from the house of God; and if it begins first from us, what will be the outcome for those who disobey the gospel of God? |
|
18“And if the righteous person is saved with difficulty,
where will the ungodly and the sinner appear?” {Prov. 11:31 LXX} |
| 19Therefore, let those also who suffer according to the will of God entrust their souls to a faithful Creator while continuing to do good. |
