Chapter 2
Forgiveness for the Offender
1For I decided this for myself: not to come to you again in sorrow. 2For if I cause you sorrow, then who is there to make me glad except the one I have made sorrowful? 3I wrote exactly this so that, when I came, I would not have sorrow from those who ought to make me rejoice; for I had confidence in all of you that my joy is the joy of you all. 4For out of much affliction and anguish of heart I wrote to you with many tears—not so that you would be made sorrowful, but so that you might know the abundant love I have for you.
5Now if anyone has caused sorrow, he has not caused sorrow to me, but to some extent—not to be too severe—to all of you. 6This punishment by the majority is sufficient for such a person, 7so that instead you should rather forgive and comfort him, or else he might be overwhelmed by excessive sorrow. 8Therefore I urge you to reaffirm your love for him. 9For this was my purpose in writing: to see the proof of you, whether you are obedient in all things. 10Anyone you forgive, I also forgive. For indeed, what I have forgiven—if I have forgiven anything—has been for your sake in the presence of Christ, 11so that we might not be outwitted by Satan; for we are not ignorant of his schemes.
An Open Door and a Restless Spirit
12When I came to Troas for the gospel of Christ, even though a door was opened for me in the Lord, 13I had no rest in my spirit because I did not find my brother Titus there. So, saying goodbye to them, I went on to Macedonia.
The Triumphal Procession
14But thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumphal procession in Christ, and through us spreads the fragrance of the knowledge of Him in every place. 15For we are the aroma of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing; 16to the one, an odor from death to death, to the other, a fragrance from life to life. And who is sufficient for these things? 17For we are not like the many who peddle the word of God for profit; but as from sincerity, as from God, we speak in Christ in the sight of God.
