Chapter 3
Civic Duty and the Logic of Grace
1Remind them to be subject to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready for every good work, 2to slander no one, to avoid fighting, to be gentle, showing every consideration to all people. 3For we ourselves were once foolish, disobedient, led astray, enslaved to various desires and pleasures, passing our days in malice and envy, hated and hating one another.
4But when the kindness and the love for mankind of God our Savior appeared, 5He saved us—not by works in righteousness which we ourselves performed, but according to His own mercy—through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, 6whom He poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, 7so that, having been justified by His grace, we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.
Avoiding Division
8Trustworthy is this word; and I want you to speak confidently about these things, so that those who have believed in God may be intent on leading the way in good works. These things are good and profitable for people. 9But stay away from foolish controversies and genealogies and strife and legalistic battles; for they are unprofitable and worthless. 10Reject a divisive person after a first and second warning, 11knowing that such a person is perverted and continues to sin, being self-condemned.
Final Instructions and Greetings
12When I send Artemas or Tychicus to you, make every effort to come to me at Nicopolis, for I have decided to spend the winter there. 13Diligently help Zenas the lawyer and Apollos on their journey, so that nothing is lacking for them. 14And let our people also learn to lead the way in good works for necessary needs, so that they may not be unfruitful.
15All who are with me greet you. Greet those who love us in the faith. Grace be with you all.
