Chapter 1
Greeting
1Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus through the will of God, according to the promise of life that is in Christ Jesus, 2to Timothy, my beloved child: Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.
Fan the Flame of Faith
3I am thankful to God—whom I serve with a clear conscience as my ancestors did—as I constantly remember you in my petitions night and day. 4Remembering your tears, I long to see you so that I may be filled with joy. 5I am reminded of the sincere faith within you, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am persuaded lives in you as well. 6For this reason, I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands. 7For God did not give us a spirit of cowardice, but of power and love and self-discipline.
8Therefore, do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord or of me His prisoner, but join with me in suffering for the Gospel according to the power of God. 9He is the one who saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works but according to His own purpose and grace, which was given to us in Christ Jesus before time began, 10but has now been revealed through the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus. He has abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the Gospel. 11For this Gospel I was appointed a herald, an apostle, and a teacher; 12and for this reason I also suffer these things. But I am not ashamed, for I know whom I have believed, and I am persuaded that He is able to guard my deposit until that Day. 13Hold to the standard of sound words which you heard from me, in the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. 14Guard the good deposit through the Holy Spirit who dwells within us.
Desertion and Devotion
15You know this: that everyone in Asia has turned away from me, including Phygelus and Hermogenes. 16May the Lord grant mercy to the household of Onesiphorus, because he often refreshed me and was not ashamed of my chain. 17On the contrary, when he arrived in Rome, he searched for me diligently and found me. 18May the Lord grant to him to find mercy from the Lord on that Day! And you know very well how much he served in Ephesus.
