Chapter 6
Instructions for Bondservants
1All who are under the yoke as bondservants should consider their own masters worthy of full honor, so that the name of God and the teaching may not be slandered. 2Those who have believing masters must not be disrespectful because they are brothers, but rather serve them even better, because those who receive the benefit of their service are believers and beloved.
False Teachers and the Love of Money
Teach and urge these things. 3If anyone teaches strange doctrines and does not agree with the sound words of our Lord Jesus Christ and the teaching that accords with godliness, 4he is conceited, understanding nothing, but having a morbid craving for controversies and disputes about words. From these come envy, strife, slanders, evil suspicions, 5and constant friction between people whose minds are corrupted and who are deprived of the truth, imagining that godliness is a means of gain. 6But godliness with contentment is great gain. 7For we brought nothing into the world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. 8But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with these. 9But those who want to be rich fall into temptation and a snare and many foolish and harmful desires, which plunge people into ruin and destruction. 10For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils, which some, by reaching for it, have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.
The Good Fight of Faith
11But you, O man of God, flee from these things. Pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance, and gentleness. 12Fight the good fight of the faith; take hold of the eternal life to which you were called and for which you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses. 13I charge you in the presence of God, who gives life to all things, and of Christ Jesus, who testified to the good confession before Pontius Pilate, 14to keep the commandment without spot or reproach until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ, 15which He will display at the proper time—He who is the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords, 16who alone possesses immortality, dwelling in unapproachable light, whom no human being has seen or is able to see. To Him be honor and eternal power. Amen.
Instructions for the Wealthy
17Command those who are rich in this present age not to be arrogant, nor to set their hope on the uncertainty of wealth, but on God, who richly provides us with all things for our enjoyment. 18They are to do good, to be rich in noble works, to be generous and ready to share, 19storing up for themselves a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is truly life.
Final Charge to Timothy
20O Timothy, guard the deposit entrusted to you, turning away from godless empty chatter and the contradictions of what is falsely called “knowledge,” 21which some, by professing it, have missed the mark regarding the faith. Grace be with you all.
