Chapter 12
Visions and the Third Heaven
1It is necessary to boast; though it is not profitable, I will go on to visions and revelations of the Lord. 2I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago—whether in the body I do not know, or out of the body I do not know, God knows—was snatched up to the third heaven. 3And I know that this man—whether in the body or apart from the body I do not know, God knows—4 was snatched up into Paradise and heard unspeakable words, which a human being is not permitted to speak. 5On behalf of such a man I will boast, but on my own behalf I will not boast, except in my weaknesses. 6For if I should wish to boast, I will not be a fool, for I will be speaking the truth; but I refrain from it, so that no one may credit me with more than what he sees in me or hears from me.
The Thorn and the Sufficiency of Grace
7And because of the extraordinary greatness of the revelations—for this reason, so that I would not be overly exalted, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, a messenger of Satan, to strike me, so that I would not be overly exalted. 8Three times I pleaded with the Lord about this, that it might leave me. 9And He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness.” Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast in my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may spread its tent over me. 10Therefore I am well-pleased with weaknesses, with insults, with hardships, with persecutions and calamities, for the sake of Christ; for when I am weak, then I am strong.
Paul’s Concern for the Corinthians
11I have become a fool! You forced me to it. For I ought to have been commended by you; for I was in no way inferior to those “super-apostles,” even if I am nothing. 12The signs of a true apostle were performed among you with all endurance, by signs and wonders and miracles. 13For in what way were you treated as less than the rest of the churches, except that I myself did not become a dead-weight to you? Forgive me this injustice!
14 Ἰδοὺ τρίτον τοῦτο ἑτοίμως ἔχω ἐλθεῖν πρὸς ὑμᾶς, καὶ οὐ καταναρκήσω· οὐ γὰρ ζητῶ τὰ ὑμῶν ἀλλὰ ὑμᾶς. οὐ γὰρ ὀφείλει τὰ τέκνα τοῖς γονεῦσιν θησαυρίζειν ἀλλὰ οἱ γονεῖς τοῖς τέκνοις. 15 ἐγὼ δὲ ἥδιστα δαπανήσω καὶ ἐκδαπανηθήσομαι ὑπὲρ τῶν ψυχῶν ὑμῶν. εἰ περισσοτέρως ὑμᾶς ἀγαπῶ, ἧσσον ἀγαπῶμαι; 16 ἔστω δέ, ἐγὼ οὐ κατεβάρησα ὑμᾶς· ἀλλὰ ὑπάρχων πανοῦργος δόλῳ ὑμᾶς ἔλαβον. 17 μή τινα ὧν ἀπέσταλκα πρὸς ὑμᾶς, δι' αὐτοῦ ἐπλεονέκτησα ὑμᾶς; 18 παρεκάλεσα Τίτον καὶ συναπέστειλα τὸν ἀδελφόν· μήτι ἐπλεονέκτησεν ὑμᾶς Τίτος; οὐ τῷ αὐτῷ πνεύματι περιεπατήσαμεν; οὐ τοῖς αὐτοῖς ἴχνεσιν;
14Look, this is the third time I am ready to come to you, and I will not be a burden; for I do not seek what is yours, but you. For children ought not to save up for their parents, but parents for their children. 15I will most gladly spend and be utterly spent for the sake of your souls. If I love you more abundantly, am I to be loved less? 16But be that as it may, I did not weigh you down. Yet, [some say] being “crafty,” I caught you by trickery! 17Did I exploit you through any of those I sent to you? 18I urged Titus to go, and I sent the brother with him. Titus didn’t exploit you, did he? Did we not walk in the same spirit? In the very same footsteps?
19All this time you have been thinking that we are defending ourselves to you. We are speaking in the sight of God in Christ! And all of it, beloved, is for your building up. 20For I fear that perhaps when I come I may find you not as I wish, and that I may be found by you not as you wish—that perhaps there may be strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambitions, slanders, whispers, conceits, and disorders. 21I fear that when I come again my God may humble me before you, and I may mourn for many of those who sinned previously and have not repented of the impurity, sexual immorality, and sensuality which they practiced.
