Chapter 3
The Purpose of This Letter
1Beloved, this is now the second letter I am writing to you, in both of which I am stirring up your sincere mind by way of a reminder, 2so that you may remember the words previously spoken by the holy prophets and the commandment of the Lord and Savior given through your apostles.
The Scorn of the Last Days
3Know this first: that in the last days scoffers will come with their scoffing, following after their own desires 4and saying, “Where is the promise of His coming? For ever since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue exactly as they have been from the beginning of creation.” 5For they willfully ignore this fact: that by the word of God heavens existed long ago and an earth was formed out of water and through water, 6by means of which the world that then existed was flooded with water and perished. 7But by the same word, the present heavens and earth are being reserved for fire, being kept until the day of judgment and the destruction of ungodly people.

A New Heaven and Earth
|
8But do not let this one fact escape your notice, beloved: that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like one day. 9The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not willing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance.
The Day of the Lord and the New Creation
10But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, in which the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the cosmic elements will be dissolved by intense heat, and the earth and the works within it will be exposed. 11Since all these things are to be dissolved in this way, what sort of people ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, 12as you look for and hasten the coming of the day of God? Because of that day, the heavens will be dissolved by fire and the cosmic elements will melt with intense heat. 13But according to His promise, we are looking for new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness makes its home.
Final Exhortation and Doxology
14Therefore, beloved, since you are looking for these things, make every effort to be found by Him in peace, spotless and blameless. 15And regard the patience of our Lord as salvation, just as our beloved brother Paul also wrote to you according to the wisdom given to him, 16as he does in all his letters when he speaks in them about these things. There are some things in them that are hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable distort, as they do the rest of the Scriptures, to their own destruction. 17You therefore, beloved, knowing this beforehand, be on your guard so that you are not carried away by the error of lawless people and fall from your own stable footing. 18But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.
