Chapter 2
An Appeal for Unity and the Christ Hymn
1Therefore, if there is any encouragement in Christ, if any consolation of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any deep affection and compassion, 2fulfill my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being united in soul, and focusing on the one thing. 3Do nothing from selfish ambition or empty conceit, but in humility let each consider others as more important than themselves. 4Let each of you look out not only for your own interests, but also for the interests of others. 5Have this mindset in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus:
6Who, though He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be grasped, 7but He emptied Himself, by taking the form of a slave, by becoming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, 8He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death— even death on a cross! 9Therefore God also highly exalted Him and graciously gave Him the name that is above every name, 10so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow— of those in heaven and on earth and under the earth— 11and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Shining as Lights in the World
12So then, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed—not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence—work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. 13For it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure. 14Do all things without grumbling and arguing, 15so that you may become blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you shine like stars in the universe, 16holding fast to the word of life. Then I will have a reason to boast on the day of Christ that I did not run in vain or labor in vain. 17But even if I am being poured out as a drink offering upon the sacrifice and service of your faith, I rejoice and share my joy with you all. 18In the same way, you also should rejoice and share your joy with me.
Commending Timothy and Epaphroditus
19Now I hope in the Lord Jesus to send Timothy to you soon, so that I also may be cheered by knowing your circumstances. 20For I have no one else like-minded who will genuinely be concerned for your welfare. 21For they all seek their own interests, not those of Jesus Christ. 22But you know his proven worth, that like a child serving a father, he served with me for the sake of the gospel. 23Therefore I hope to send him just as soon as I see how things go with me; 24and I am confident in the Lord that I myself will also come soon.
25 But I considered it necessary to send back to you Epaphroditus—my brother, fellow worker, and fellow soldier, as well as your messenger and minister to my need. 26For he has been longing for you all and is deeply distressed because you heard that he was ill. 27Indeed he was ill, near to death; but God had mercy on him, and not on him only but also on me, so that I would not have sorrow upon sorrow. 28Therefore I have sent him all the more eagerly, so that by seeing him again you may rejoice and I may be less anxious. 29So welcome him in the Lord with all joy and hold men like him in high honor, 30because for the work of Christ he came close to death, risking his life to make up for the service you were not here to give me.
