Chapter 1
Greeting
1Paul and Timothy, slaves of Christ Jesus, to all the saints in Christ Jesus who are in Philippi, together with the overseers and deacons: 2Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
Thanksgiving and Prayer for the Philippians
3I thank my God every time I remember you, 4always in every prayer of mine for all of you, making my request with joy 5because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now. 6I am confident of this very thing: that He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion until the day of Christ Jesus. 7It is right for me to feel this way about all of you, because I have you in my heart; for both in my chains and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel, you are all my partners in grace. 8For God is my witness how I long for all of you with the deep affection of Christ Jesus.
9And this I pray: that your love may overflow more and more in knowledge and all discernment, 10so that you may approve the things that are superior, in order that you may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, 11having been filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.
The Advance of the Gospel in Chains
12Now I want you to know, brothers, that the things concerning me have actually resulted in the progress of the gospel, 13so that it has become clear throughout the whole Praetorium and to everyone else that my chains are for Christ. 14And most of the brothers, having gained confidence in the Lord because of my chains, are daring even more to speak the word fearlessly.
Rivalries and Rejoicing
15Some, to be sure, are preaching Christ out of envy and rivalry, but others out of good will. 16The latter do so from love, knowing that I am appointed for the defense of the gospel; 17but the former proclaim Christ out of selfish ambition, not purely, thinking to stir up trouble for me in my chains. 18What then? Only that in every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is being proclaimed—and in this I rejoice.
Yes, and I will continue to rejoice, 19for I know that this will result in my deliverance through your prayers and the provision of the Spirit of Jesus Christ, 20according to my intense expectation and hope: that I will be put to shame in nothing, but with all boldness, as always, so now also Christ will be magnified in my body, whether by life or by death.
To Live Is Christ
21For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. 22But if I am to go on living in the flesh, this means fruitful labor for me; and which I shall choose, I do not know. 23I am hard-pressed between the two: I have the desire to depart and be with Christ, for that is very much better; 24but to remain in the flesh is more necessary for your sake. 25Since I am convinced of this, I know that I will remain and continue with you all for your progress and joy in the faith, 26so that your cause for boasting in Christ Jesus may overflow because of me, through my coming to you again.
Worthy Citizenship
27Only conduct yourselves as citizens in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear about your circumstances—that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one soul striving together for the faith of the gospel, 28and not being intimidated in any way by your opponents. This is a clear sign to them of destruction, but of your salvation, and this is from God. 29For it has been granted to you on behalf of Christ, not only to believe in Him, but also to suffer on His behalf, 30since you are engaged in the same struggle which you saw in me and now hear to be in me.
