Chapter 6
Dead to Sin, Alive in Christ
1What then shall we say? Should we persist in sin so that grace may increase? 2May it never be! How can we, who died to sin, still live in it? 3Or are you ignorant that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4Therefore, we were buried with him through baptism into death, so that just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we also might walk in newness of life. 5For if we have become united with him in the likeness of his death, we shall certainly also be united with him in the likeness of his resurrection. 6We know this: that our old self was crucified with him, so that the body of sin might be rendered powerless, with the result that we should no longer be enslaved to sin. 7For the one who has died has been acquitted from sin. 8Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him, 9knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, no longer dies; death no longer acts as master over him. 10For the death he died, he died to sin once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God. 11In the same way, you also must consider yourselves to be dead to sin, but living to God in Christ Jesus.
12Therefore, do not let sin reign as king in your mortal body so that you obey its desires, 13and do not offer your body parts to sin as weapons of unrighteousness; but offer yourselves to God as those brought from death to life, and your body parts to God as weapons of righteousness. 14For sin will not be master over you, for you are not under law but under grace.
Slaves to Righteousness
15What then? Should we sin because we are not under law but under grace? May it never be! 16Do you not know that when you present yourselves to someone as obedient slaves, you are slaves to the one you obey—whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness? 17But thanks be to God that, though you used to be slaves of sin, you became obedient from the heart to that pattern of teaching to which you were handed over. 18And having been set free from sin, you were enslaved to righteousness.
19I am speaking in human terms because of the weakness of your flesh. For just as you presented your body parts as slaves to impurity and to lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your body parts as slaves to righteousness leading to sanctification. 20For when you were slaves of sin, you were “free” in relation to righteousness. 21So what fruit were you producing then? Things of which you are now ashamed! For the end-result of those things is death. 22But now, having been set free from sin and having been enslaved to God, you have your fruit leading to sanctification, and the end-result is eternal life. 23For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
