Chapter 2

AlexandrinusVaticanus

Creation of Man and Woman

1 Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the army of them.

1 And the sky and the land were finished, and the entire world of them. 1 And the sky and the land were finished, and all the world of them.

2 And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.

2 And on the sixth day, God finished his works which he made. And on the seventh day, he ceased from all his works which he made. 2 And on the sixth day, God finished his works which he made. And on the seventh day, he ceased from all his works which he made.

3 And God blessed the seventh day, and consecrated it; because on it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.

3 And God blessed the seventh day and consecrated it, because in it he ceased from all his works which God began to do. 3 And God blessed the seventh day and consecrated it, because in it he ceased from all his works which God began to do.

4 These are the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created, in the day that Yahweh Elohim made the earth and the heavens,

4 This is the history of the beginning of sky and land, when they came to be, in the day in which God made the sky and the land, 4 This is the history of the beginning of sky and land, when they came to be, in the day in which the Lord God made the sky and the land,

5 And every plant of the field before it was in the earth, and every herb of the field before it grew; for Yahweh Elohim had not caused it to rain on the earth, and there was not a man to till the ground.

5 and every green thing of the field before it was on the ground, and all the vegetation of the field before it sprang up, for God didn’t rain on the earth, and there wasn’t a man to cultivate the ground. 5 and every green thing of the field before it was on the ground, and all the vegetation of the field before it sprang up, for God didn’t rain on the earth, and there wasn’t a man to cultivate it.

6 But there went up a mist from the earth, and watered the whole face of the ground.

6 But a fountain would rise out of the earth and irrigate all the surface of the ground. 6 But a fountain would rise out of the earth and irrigate all the surface of the ground.

7 And Yahweh Elohim formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

7 And God formed the man from dust of the ground and blew on his face the breath of life, and the man became a living soul. 7 And God formed the man from dust of the ground and blew on his face the breath of life, and the man became a living soul.

8 And Yahweh Elohim planted an orchard eastward in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed.

8 And the Lord God planted an orchard eastward in Edem, and placed there the man whom he had formed. 8 And the Lord God planted an orchard eastward in Edem, and placed there the man whom he had formed.

9 And out of the ground, Yahweh Elohim made to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the orchard, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

9 Also, God caused to spring up out of the ground every tree beautiful to sight and good for food, and the tree of life in the middle of the orchard, and the tree of understanding the knowledge of good and evil. 9 Also, God caused to spring up out of the ground every tree beautiful to sight and good for food, and the tree of life in the middle of the orchard, and the tree of understanding the knowledge of good and evil.

10 And a river went out of Eden to water the orchard; and from there it was parted, and became into four heads.

10 And a river proceeds out of Edem to irrigate the orchard, from there it divides itself into four heads. 10 And a river proceeds out of Edem to irrigate the orchard, from there it divides itself into four heads.

11 The name of the first is Pison: that is it which encircles the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold;

11 The name of the one, Phisōm, this one encircles all the land of Evilat, where there is gold. 11 The name of the one, Phisōm, this one encircles all the land of Evilat, where there is gold.

12 And the gold of that land is good; there is bdellium and the onyx stone.

12 And the gold of that land is good, there also is carbuncle and onyx stone. 12 And the gold of that land is good, there also is carbuncle and onyx stone.

13 And the name of the second river is Gihon: the same is it that encircles the whole land of Ethiopia.

13 And the name of the second river is Gēōn, this one encircles all the land of Aithiopia. 13 And the name of the second river is Geōn, this one encircles all the land of Aithiopia.

14 And the name of the third river is Hiddekel: that is it which goes toward the east of Assyria. And the fourth river is Euphrates.

14 And the third river is Tigris, this one goes opposite the Assyrians. And this fourth river is Euphratēs. 14 And the third river is Tigris, this one goes opposite the Assyrians. And the fourth river is Euphratēs.

15 And Yahweh Elohim took the man, and put him into the orchard of Eden to dress it and to keep it.

15 And the Lord God took the man whom he had formed, and placed him in the orchard, to cultivate and guard it. 15 And the Lord God took the man whom he had formed, and placed him in the orchard of delight, to cultivate and guard it.

16 And Yahweh Elohim commanded the man, saying, “Of every tree of the orchard you may freely eat.

16 And the Lord God gave orders to Adam, saying, “You may freely eat from every tree which is in the orchard, 16 And the Lord God gave orders to Adam, saying, “You may freely eat from every tree which is in the orchard,

17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, you shall not eat of it; for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.”

17 but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil – don’t eat from it; but on whatever day you eat from it, you will die in death.” 17 but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil – don’t eat from it; but on whatever day you eat from it, you will die in death.”

18 And Yahweh Elohim said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper suitable for him.”

18 And the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man is alone, let’s make for him a help matching him.” 18 And the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man is alone, let’s make for him a help matching him.”

19 And out of the ground Yahweh Elohim formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air; and brought them to Adam to see what he would call them; and whatever Adam called every living creature, that was its name.

19 Also out of the earth, God formed all the wild beasts of the field, and all the birds of the sky, and he brought them to Adam, to see what he would call them, and whatever Adam called a living creature, that was its name. 19 Also out of the earth, God formed all the wild beasts of the field, and all the birds of the sky, and he brought them to Adam, to see what he would call them, and whatever Adam called a living creature, that was its name.

20 And Adam gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field; but for Adam there was not found a help meet for him.

20 And Adam gave names to all the cattle and to all the birds of the sky, and to all the wild beasts of the field, but for Adam there wasn’t found a help like himself. 20 And Adam gave names to all the cattle and to all the birds of the sky, and to all the wild beasts of the field, but for Adam there wasn’t found a help like himself.

21 And Yahweh Elohim caused a deep sleep to fall on Adam and he slept; and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead of it;

21 And God cast a trance on Adam, and he slept, and he took one of his ribs, and filled up the flesh instead of it. 21 And God cast a trance on Adam, and he slept, and he took one of his ribs, and filled up the flesh instead of it.

22 And from the rib, which Yahweh Elohim had taken from man, he made a woman, and brought her to the man.

22 And the Lord God built the rib which he took from Adam into a woman, and brought her to Adam. 22 And God built the rib which he took from Adam into a woman, and brought her to Adam.

23 And Adam said, “This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman,[1] because she was taken out of Man.”

23 And Adam said, “This now is bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh; she will be called woman, because she was taken out of her husband.” 23 And Adam said, “This now is bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh; she will be called woman, because she was taken out of her husband.”

24 Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cling to his wife; and they shall be one flesh.

24 For this reason, a man will forsake his father and his mother and be devoted to his wife, and the two will be one flesh. 24 For this reason, a man will forsake his father and his mother and be devoted to his wife, and the two will be one flesh.

25 [LXX 3:1] And the two were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.

25 [LXX 3:1] And the two were naked, both the man and his wife, and were not ashamed. 25 [LXX 3:1] And the two were naked, both the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.

[1] She is called ‘ashe’ because she was taken from ‘aish.’
