Chapter 2
Paul’s Conduct and Ministry
1For you yourselves know, brothers and sisters, that our entrance among you was not in vain. 2But although we had already suffered and been treated outrageously in Philippi, as you know, we had the boldness in our God to speak the gospel of God to you in the face of great struggle. 3For our appeal does not spring from error or impure motives, nor is it with intent to deceive. 4On the contrary, just as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel, so we speak—not as those trying to please people, but God, who examines our hearts.
5For as you know, we never came with flattering speech, nor with a pretext for greed—God is witness— 6nor were we seeking glory from people, whether from you or from others. 7Although as apostles of Christ we could have asserted our authority, we proved to be gentle among you, like a nursing mother tenderly caring for her own children. 8Having such a fond affection for you, we were delighted to share with you not only the gospel of God but also our very own lives, because you had become dear to us.
9For you remember, brothers and sisters, our labor and hardship: working night and day so as not to be a burden to any of you, we proclaimed to you the gospel of God. 10You are witnesses, and so is God, of how devoutly and righteously and blamelessly we conducted ourselves toward you who believe. 11For you know that we dealt with each one of you like a father with his own children, 12encouraging you, comforting you, and urging you to walk in a manner worthy of God, who calls you into His own kingdom and glory.
Reception of the Word and Persecution
13And for this reason we also give thanks to God constantly, that when you received the word of God which you heard from us, you accepted it not as a human word but as what it truly is—the word of God, which is also at work in you who believe. 14For you, brothers and sisters, became imitators of the churches of God in Christ Jesus that are in Judea, because you also suffered the same things at the hands of your own countrymen as they did from the Jews— 15who killed both the Lord Jesus and the prophets, and drove us out, and are not pleasing to God and are hostile to all people, 16hindering us from speaking to the Gentiles so that they might be saved, so as always to fill up the measure of their sins. But wrath has come upon them to the uttermost.
Paul’s Longing to Return
17But since we were torn away from you, brothers and sisters, for a short time—in person, not in heart—we were all the more eager with great desire to see you face to face. 18For we wanted to come to you—I, Paul, did so again and again—but Satan hindered us. 19For who is our hope or joy or crown of boasting before our Lord Jesus at His coming? Is it not indeed you? 20For you are our glory and joy.
