Chapter 3
Perilous Times and Moral Decay
1But know this: in the last days, difficult times will come. 2For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, slanderers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3unloving, irreconcilable, malicious gossips, without self-control, brutal, haters of good, 4treacherous, reckless, puffed up with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, 5holding to a form of godliness but having denied its power. Turn away from these people!
6For among them are those who slip into households and captivate weak-willed women burdened with sins and led astray by various desires, 7always learning and never able to come to a full knowledge of the truth. 8Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so these people also oppose the truth—men of depraved minds, disqualified regarding the faith. 9But they will not progress much further; for their folly will be plain to everyone, just as it was with those men.
The Anchor of Example and Scripture
10You, however, have closely followed my teaching, my way of life, my purpose, my faith, my patience, my love, my endurance, 11my persecutions, and my sufferings—such as happened to me in Antioch, in Iconium, and in Lystra. What persecutions I endured! And yet the Lord rescued me from them all. 12Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted. 13But evil people and impostors will progress from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived.
14But as for you, remain in what you have learned and have become convinced of, knowing from whom you learned it, 15and that from infancy you have known the sacred writings, which are able to give you the wisdom that leads to salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16All Scripture is God-breathed and profitable for teaching, for rebuke, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17so that the man of God may be complete, fully equipped for every good work.
