Chapter 10
The Righteousness of Faith vs. The Law
| 1Brothers, the desire of my heart and my petition to God on their behalf is for their salvation. 2For I testify concerning them that they have a zeal for God, but it is not based on full knowledge. 3For being ignorant of the righteousness that comes from God, and seeking to establish their own, they did not submit to God’s righteousness. 4For Christ is the telos—the end and goal—of the law, resulting in righteousness for everyone who believes. |
{Joel 2:32} |

5For Moses writes concerning the righteousness that is based on the law: “The person who does these things shall live by them.”
{Lev. 18:5}
6But the righteousness based on faith speaks like this: “Do not say in your heart,
{Deut. 9:4}
‘Who will ascend into heaven?’”
{Deut. 30:12}
(that is, to bring Christ down),
7“or, ‘Who will descend into the abyss?’”
{Deut. 30:13}
(that is, to bring Christ up from the dead).
8But what does it say?
“The word is near you,
that is, the word of faith which we are proclaiming.
9Because if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
10For with the heart one believes resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth one confesses resulting in salvation.
11For the Scripture says, “Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame.”
{Isaiah 28:16}
12For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, abounding in riches for all who call upon him.
13For “Everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord will be saved.”
{Joel 2:32}
in your mouth and in your heart” {Deut. 30:14} |
|
14How then shall they call upon him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without someone preaching?
15And how shall they preach unless they are sent? Just as it is written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring the good news of good things!”
{Isaiah 52:7}
16But not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed our message?”
{Isaiah 53:1}
17So then, faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.
18But I ask, have they not heard? Indeed they have:
“Their voice has gone out into all the earth,
and their words to the ends of the inhabited world.” {Psalm 18 (19):4} |
|
19But I ask, did Israel not know? First, Moses says:
“I will make you jealous by those who are not a nation;
by a nation without understanding I will make you angry.” {Deut. 32:31} |
|
20And Isaiah is bold enough to say:
“I was found by those who were not seeking me;
I became visible to those who were not asking for me.” {Isaiah 65:1} |
{Isaiah 65:2} |
| 21But concerning Israel he says: “All day long I have stretched out my hands to a disobedient and contrary people.” {Isaiah 65:2} |
