Greeting and Salutation
1Paul, called to be an apostle of Christ Jesus through the will of God, and Sosthenes our brother, 2to the church of God which is in Corinth—to those sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, together with all those in every place who call upon the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, their Lord and ours: 3Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
Thanksgiving for Spiritual Gifts
4I thank my God always concerning you for the grace of God given to you in Christ Jesus, 5because in every way you were enriched in him—in all speech and all knowledge— 6just as the testimony about Christ was confirmed in you, 7so that you do not lack any spiritual gift as you eagerly await the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ. 8He will also confirm you until the end, so that you are irreproachable on the day of our Lord Jesus [Christ]. 9God is faithful, through whom you were called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.
A Call for Unity Against Factions
10Now I urge you, brothers and sisters, through the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all say the same thing and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be knit together in the same mind and the same conviction. 11For it has been made clear to me concerning you, my brothers and sisters, by those of Chloe’s household, that there are rivalries among you. 12What I mean is this: each of you is saying, “I belong to Paul,” or “I belong to Apollos,” or “I belong to Cephas,” or “I belong to Christ.” 13Has Christ been sliced into pieces? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized into the name of Paul? 14I thank God that I baptized none of you except Crispus and Gaius, 15so that no one can say you were baptized into my name. 16(I did also baptize the household of Stephanas; beyond that, I do not know if I baptized anyone else.) 17For Christ did not send me to baptize but to preach the gospel—and not with “wise” rhetoric, so that the cross of Christ would not be emptied of its power.
The Foolishness of the Cross and the Wisdom of God
18For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved, it is the power of God. 19For it is written:
  I will destroy the wisdom of the wise,
and the cleverness of the clever I will set aside.
{Isa. 29:14}
20Where is the wise man? Where is the scholar? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has God not made the wisdom of the world look foolish? 21For since, in the wisdom of God, the world through its wisdom did not know God, God was pleased through the “foolishness” of the proclamation to save those who believe. 22For since Jews demand signs and Greeks seek wisdom, 23we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, 24but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God. 25For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength.
26 Βλέπετε γὰρ τὴν κλῆσιν ὑμῶν, ἀδελφοί, ὅτι οὐ πολλοὶ σοφοὶ κατὰ σάρκα, οὐ πολλοὶ δυνατοί, οὐ πολλοὶ εὐγενεῖς· 27 ἀλλὰ τὰ μωρὰ τοῦ κόσμου ἐξελέξατο ὁ θεός, ἵνα καταισχύνῃ τοὺς σοφούς, καὶ τὰ ἀσθενῆ τοῦ κόσμου ἐξελέξατο ὁ θεός, ἵνα καταισχύνῃ τὰ ἰσχυρά, 28 καὶ τὰ ἀγενῆ τοῦ κόσμου καὶ τὰ ἐξουθενημένα ἐξελέξατο ὁ θεός, τὰ μὴ ὄντα, ἵνα τὰ ὄντα καταργήσῃ, 29 ὅπως μὴ καυχήσηται πᾶσα σὰρξ ἐνώπιον τοῦ θεοῦ. 30 ἐξ αὐτοῦ δὲ ὑμεῖς ἐστε ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ, ὃς ἐγενήθη σοφία ἡμῖν ἀπὸ θεοῦ, δικαιοσύνη τε καὶ ἁγιασμὸς καὶ ἀπολύτρωσις, 31 ἵνα καθὼς γέγραπται, Ὁ καυχώμενος ἐν κυρίῳ καυχάσθω. {Jer. 9:24}
26For consider your calling, brothers and sisters: not many were wise by human standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. 27Instead, God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong; 28and God chose the insignificant things of the world and the despised things—the things that “are not”—to nullify the things that “are,” 29so that no human being might boast in the presence of God. 30But it is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God—as well as righteousness, sanctification, and redemption— 31so that, as it is written: “Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.” {Jer. 9:24}
