Chapter 3
Seeking the Things Above
1Since, then, you were raised with Christ, seek the things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2Set your mind on the things above, not on the things upon the earth. 3For you died, and your life has been hidden with Christ in God. 4When Christ—who is our life—is revealed, then you also will be revealed with Him in glory.
Putting Off the Old Self
5Therefore, put to death the parts of you that are worldly: sexual immorality, uncleanness, lust, evil desire, and greed—which is idolatry. 6Because of these things, the wrath of God is coming [upon the sons of disobedience]. 7In these things you also once walked, when you were living in them. 8But now you also must lay them all aside: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy talk from your mouth. 9Do not lie to one another, since you have stripped off the old man with its practices 10and have put on the new man, which is being renewed in full knowledge according to the image of the one who created it. 11Here there is no Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave, or free; but Christ is all and in all.
Putting On the New Self
12Therefore, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. 13Bear with one another and forgive each other if anyone has a complaint against someone; just as the Lord forgave you, so you must also forgive. 14Above all these things, put on love, which is the bond of perfection. 15And let the peace of Christ act as umpire in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful.
16Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, as you teach and admonish one another in all wisdom, singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs with grace in your hearts to God. 17And whatever you do, in word or in deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.
Instructions for the Christian Household
18Wives, be subject to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. 19Husbands, love your wives and do not be harsh toward them.
20Children, obey your parents in all things, for this is well-pleasing in the Lord. 21Fathers, do not provoke your children, so that they do not become discouraged.
22Slaves, obey your masters according to the flesh in all things, not with eye-service as people-pleasers, but with sincerity of heart, fearing the Lord. 23Whatever you do, work at it from the soul, as for the Lord and not for men, 24knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance. It is the Lord Christ you are serving. 25For the one who does wrong will be paid back for the wrong he has done, and there is no partiality.
