Chapter 2
Paul’s Struggle for the Churches
1For I want you to know how great a struggle I have on behalf of you and those in Laodicea, and for as many as have not seen my face in the flesh, 2so that their hearts may be encouraged, having been knit together in love and reaching all the wealth of the full assurance of understanding, resulting in the true knowledge of the mystery of God—which is Christ. 3In Him are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. 4I say this so that no one may deceive you with persuasive speech. 5For even if I am absent in the flesh, yet I am with you in spirit, rejoicing and seeing your orderly condition and the stability of your faith in Christ.
Fullness in Christ vs. Human Tradition
6Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, walk in Him, 7having been rooted and being built up in Him and being established in the faith just as you were taught, overflowing in thanksgiving. 8See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deceit according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world and not according to Christ. 9For in Him all the fullness of the Deity dwells bodily, 10and you have been filled in Him, who is the head of all rule and authority.
11In Him you were also circumcised with a circumcision performed without hands, by the stripping off of the body of the flesh, in the circumcision of Christ, 12having been buried with Him in baptism, in which you were also raised with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead. 13And you, being dead in your transgressions and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He made alive together with Him, having graciously forgiven us all our transgressions. 14He wiped out the handwritten debt-record consisting of decrees against us, which was hostile to us; He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. 15Having disarmed the rulers and authorities, He made a public display of them, triumphing over them in Him.
Warning Against Legalism and False Asceticism
16Therefore, let no one judge you in matters of food or drink, or in respect to a festival or a New Moon or Sabbaths, 17which are a shadow of the things to come, but the substance belongs to Christ. 18Let no one disqualify you by insisting on self-abasement and the worship of angels, taking his stand on things he has seen, being puffed up without cause by his fleshly mind, 19and not holding fast to the Head, from whom the entire body, being supplied and knit together through its joints and ligaments, grows with a growth that is from God.
20If you died with Christ to the elemental spirits of the world, why, as if living in the world, do you submit to decrees: 21“Do not handle, do not taste, do not touch”? 22These things all perish with use, being based on human commands and teachings. 23These things indeed have an appearance of wisdom in self-made religion and self-abasement and severe treatment of the body, but they are of no value against the indulgence of the flesh.
