Chapter 4
The Source of Conflict and the Call to Repent

1Where do the wars and where do the battles among you come from? Do they not come from here—from your pleasures that are at war within your members?
2You desire and you do not have; you murder and you are jealous and you are not able to obtain; you battle and you wage war. You do not have because you do not ask.
3You ask and you do not receive because you ask wrongly, so that you may spend it on your pleasures.
4You adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity toward God? Therefore, whoever intends to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.
5Or do you suppose the Scripture speaks in vain? “The Spirit He caused to dwell in us yearns with jealousy,”
6but He gives a greater grace. Therefore it says:
“God opposes the proud,
but gives grace to the humble.” {Prov. 3:34 LXX} |
7Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. 8Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. 9Lament and mourn and weep! Let your laughter be turned into mourning and your joy into gloom. 10Humble yourselves before the Lord, and He will exalt you.
11 Μὴ καταλαλεῖτε ἀλλήλων, ἀδελφοί. ὁ καταλαλῶν ἀδελφοῦ ἢ κρίνων τὸν ἀδελφὸν αὐτοῦ καταλαλεῖ νόμου καὶ κρίνει νόμον· εἰ δὲ νόμον κρίνεις, οὐκ εἶ ποιητὴς νόμου ἀλλὰ κριτής. 12 εἷς ἐστιν [ὁ] νομοθέτης καὶ κριτὴς ὁ δυνάμενος σῶσαι καὶ ἀπολέσαι· σὺ δὲ τίς εἶ ὁ κρίνων τὸν πλησίον;
11Do not speak against one another, brothers. The one who speaks against a brother or judges his brother speaks against the law and judges the law. But if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge. 12There is only one Lawgiver and Judge, the one who is able to save and to destroy. But who are you to be judging your neighbor?
Warning Against Arrogant Planning
13Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a city and spend a year there and trade and make a profit”— 14yet you do not even know what your life will be like tomorrow! For you are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes away. 15Instead, you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.” 16But as it is, you boast in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil. 17So for the one who knows the right thing to do and does not do it, to him it is sin.
