Chapter 12
The Living Sacrifice and the Transformed Mind
1I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and well-pleasing to God, which is your rational act of worship. 2And do not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, so that you may discern what the will of God is—that which is good and well-pleasing and perfect.
3For through the grace given to me, I say to every one of you: do not think more highly of yourself than you ought to think; instead, think so as to have a “sober mind,” according to the measure of faith that God has distributed to each. 4For just as in one body we have many parts, and all the parts do not have the same function, 5so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually parts of one another. 6But having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us: if prophecy, use it in proportion to the faith; 7if service, in the serving; if one teaches, in the teaching; 8if one encourages, in the encouragement; the one who gives, with sincerity; the one who leads, with diligence; the one who shows mercy, with cheerfulness.
9Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil; cling to what is good. 10Be devoted to one another in brotherly affection; outdo one another in showing honor. 11Do not be lagging in diligence; be aglow in the Spirit; serve the Lord. 12Rejoice in hope; endure in affliction; persist in prayer. 13Share in the needs of the saints; pursue hospitality.
{Prov.
14Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. 15Rejoice with those who rejoice; weep with those who weep. 16Live in harmony with one another. Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly. Do not be wise in your own estimation. 17Repay no one evil for evil, but take thought for what is noble in the sight of all people. 18If possible, so far as it depends on you, live at peace with all people. 19Do not avenge yourselves, beloved, but give place to the “Wrath” [of God], for it is written: “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” {Deut. 32:35} 20Instead, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him a drink; for by doing this you will heap burning coals on his head.” {Prov. 25:21-22} 21Do not be conquered by evil, but conquer evil with good.
