Recalling the Ancient Mercies
| 43.1 [MT=44:1] O God, we have heard with our ears—our fathers have told us—the work which You performed in their days, in the days of old. 43.2 [MT=44:2] Your hand utterly destroyed the nations, and You planted them; You afflicted the peoples and cast them out. 43.3 [MT=44:3] For it was not by their own sword that they inherited the land, and their own arm did not save them, but Your right hand and Your arm and the light of Your countenance, because You took pleasure in them. |
| 43.4 [MT=44:4] You are my King and my God, who commands the salvations of Jacob. 43.5 [MT=44:5] Through You we will gore our enemies with horns, and through Your name we will bring to nothing those who rise up against us. 43.6 [MT=44:6] For I will not hope in my bow, and my sword shall not save me. 43.7 [MT=44:7] For You saved us from those who afflict us, and You put to shame those who hate us. 43.8 [MT=44:8] In God we shall be praised all day long, and in Your name we will give thanks forever. Pause. |
The Present Rejection
| 43.9 [MT=44:9] But now You have cast us off and put us to shame, and You will not go forth with our armies. 43.10 [MT=44:10] You turned us back to the rear before our enemies, and those who hate us plundered for themselves. 43.11 [MT=44:11] You gave us up like sheep for eating, and You scattered us among the nations. 43.12 [MT=44:12] You sold Your people without a price, and there was no great number in the exchange for them. |
| 43.13 [MT=44:13] You made us a reproach to our neighbors, a mocking and a laughingstock to those around us. 43.14 [MT=44:14] You made us a proverb among the nations, a shaking of the head among the peoples. 43.15 [MT=44:15] All day long my disgrace is before me, and the shame of my face has covered me, 43.16 [MT=44:16] because of the voice of the one reproaching and slandering, because of the face of the enemy and the pursuer. |
The Protest of Innocence
| 43.17 [MT=44:17] All these things have come upon us, yet we have not forgotten You, and we have not acted unjustly against Your covenant. 43.18 [MT=44:18] Our heart has not turned back to the rear, yet You turned our paths away from Your way. 43.19 [MT=44:19] For You humbled us in a place of affliction, and the shadow of death covered us. |
| 43.20 [MT=44:20] If we had forgotten the name of our God, and if we had spread out our hands to a strange god, 43.21 [MT=44:21] would not God search these things out? For He knows the secrets of the heart. 43.22 [MT=44:22] For for Your sake we are being put to death all day long; we were accounted as sheep for slaughter. |
A Call to the Sleeping God
| 43.23 [MT=44:23] Awake! Why do You sleep, O Lord? Arise, and do not cast us off to the end. 43.24 [MT=44:24] Why do You turn Your face away? Do You forget our poverty and our affliction? 43.25 [MT=44:25] For our soul has been humbled to the dust; our belly has cleaved to the ground. 43.26 [MT=44:26] Arise, O Lord, help us, and redeem us for the sake of Your name. |
