Chapter 9
The Earthly Sanctuary and its Limitations
1Now even the first covenant had regulations for worship and its sanctuary was an earthly one. 2For a tabernacle was prepared: the first room, in which were the lampstand, the table, and the presentation of the loaves—this is called the “Holy Place.” 3Behind the second curtain was a room called the “Holy of Holies,” 4containing a golden altar of incense and the ark of the covenant, covered on all sides with gold, in which were a golden jar containing the manna, Aaron’s staff that budded, and the tablets of the covenant. 5Above it were the cherubim of glory overshadowing the mercy seat. Concerning these things, we cannot now speak in detail.
6With these things having been so prepared, the priests enter the first room continually while performing their worship duties, 7but into the second room, only the high priest enters once a year—and never without blood, which he offers for himself and for the sins of the people committed in ignorance. 8The Holy Spirit is signifying by this that the way into the true sanctuary had not yet been revealed as long as the first tabernacle still had standing. 9This is a parable for the present time, according to which both gifts and sacrifices are offered that are not able to make the worshiper perfect in regard to the conscience, 10dealing only with food and drink and various washings—regulations for the flesh imposed until the time of reformation.
The Better Sacrifice of Christ
11But when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things that have come, He passed through the greater and more perfect tabernacle—not made with hands, that is, not of this creation. 12And not through the blood of goats and calves, but through His own blood, He entered once for all into the sanctuary, having secured eternal redemption. 13For if the blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a heifer, sprinkling those who are defiled, sanctify for the purification of the flesh, 14how much more will the blood of Christ—who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without blemish to God—purify our conscience from dead works so that we may serve the living God?
The Necessity of Death for the Covenant
15And for this reason, He is the mediator of a new covenant, so that since a death has occurred for the redemption of the transgressions committed under the first covenant, those who have been called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance. 16For where there is a will, the death of the one who made it must be established; 17for a will is valid only in the case of the dead, since it has no force while the one who made it is living. 18Hence, not even the first covenant was inaugurated without blood.
19For when every commandment of the Law had been spoken by Moses to all the people, he took the blood of calves [and goats] with water and scarlet wool and hyssop, and sprinkled both the scroll itself and all the people, 20saying: “This is the blood of the covenant which God commanded for you.” {Exodus 24:8} 21And in the same way, he sprinkled with the blood both the tabernacle and all the vessels of the ministry. 22Indeed, according to the Law, nearly everything is purified with blood, and without the shedding of blood, there is no forgiveness.
The Once-for-All Sacrifice
23Therefore, it was necessary for the copies of the things in the heavens to be purified by these means, but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these. 24For Christ did not enter a sanctuary made by hands—a mere representation of the true one—but into heaven itself, now to appear before the face of God on our behalf.
25 Nor did He enter so that He might offer Himself repeatedly, as the high priest enters the sanctuary year after year with blood that is not his own; 26for then He would have had to suffer many times since the foundation of the world. But now, once for all at the culmination of the ages, He has appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself. 27And just as it is appointed for people to die once, and after this comes judgment, 28so also Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time—apart from sin—to those who are eagerly awaiting Him for salvation.
