Chapter 10
The Shadow vs. The Reality
1For since the Law has only a shadow of the good things to come, and not the actual form of the realities themselves, it can never—by the same sacrifices which they offer continually year after year—make perfect those who draw near. 2Otherwise, would they not have ceased being offered? For the worshipers, having been cleansed once for all, would no longer have any consciousness of sins. 3But in those sacrifices there is a reminder of sins year after year. 4For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.
Christ’s Obedience and the New Will
5Therefore, when He comes into the world, He says: “Sacrifice and offering You did not desire,
but a body You have prepared for Me;
6in whole burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin
You took no pleasure.
7Then I said,
‘Behold, I have come
in the scroll of the book it is written concerning Me
to do Your will, O God.’
” {Psalm 40:6-8}
8 ἀνώτερον λέγων ὅτι Θυσίας καὶ προσφορὰς καὶ ὁλοκαυτώματα καὶ περὶ ἁμαρτίας οὐκ ἠθέλησας οὐδὲ εὐδόκησας, {Psalm 40:6} αἵτινες κατὰ νόμον προσφέρονται, 9 τότε εἴρηκεν, Ἰδοὺ ἥκω τοῦ ποιῆσαι τὸ θέλημά σου. {Psalm 40:7}
8After saying above, “Sacrifices and offerings and whole burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin You did not desire, nor did You take pleasure in them” {Psalm 40:6} (which are offered according to the Law), 9then He said, “Behold, I have come to do Your will.” {Psalm 40:7}
He does away with the first in order to establish the second. 10By that “will” we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
The Finished Work
11And every priest stands daily ministering and offering the same sacrifices repeatedly, which are never able to take away sins; 12but He, having offered one sacrifice for sins for all time, sat down at the right hand of God, 13waiting from that time onward until His enemies are made a footstool for His feet. 14For by one offering He has made perfect for all time those who are being sanctified.
15And the Holy Spirit also testifies to us; for after saying:
  16“This is the covenant that I will make with them
after those days, says the Lord:
I will put My laws upon their hearts,
and upon their minds I will write them,
” {Jer. 31:33}
17He then says,
  “And their sins and their lawless deeds
I will remember no more
.” {Jer. 31:34}
18Now where there is forgiveness of these things, there is no longer an offering for sin.
The Call to Confidence and Community
19Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence for the entrance into the sanctuary by the blood of Jesus, 20by a new and living way which He inaugurated for us through the curtain—that is, His flesh— 21and since we have a great priest over the house of God, 22let us approach with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, our hearts having been sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.
23Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for the One who promised is faithful. 24And let us consider one another so as to provoke each other to love and good works, 25not abandoning our own meeting together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.
The Danger of Defiant Sin
26 Ἑκουσίως γὰρ ἁμαρτανόντων ἡμῶν μετὰ τὸ λαβεῖν τὴν ἐπίγνωσιν τῆς ἀληθείας, οὐκέτι περὶ ἁμαρτιῶν ἀπολείπεται θυσία, 27 φοβερὰ δέ τις ἐκδοχὴ κρίσεως καὶ πυρὸς ζῆλος ἐσθίειν μέλλοντος τοὺς ὑπεναντίους. 28 ἀθετήσας τις νόμον Μωϋσέως χωρὶς οἰκτιρμῶν ἐπὶ δυσὶν ἢ τρισὶν μάρτυσιν ἀποθνῄσκει· 29 πόσῳ δοκεῖτε χείρονος ἀξιωθήσεται τιμωρίας ὁ τὸν υἱὸν τοῦ θεοῦ καταπατήσας καὶ τὸ αἷμα τῆς διαθήκης κοινὸν ἡγησάμενος, ἐν ᾧ ἡγιάσθη, καὶ τὸ πνεῦμα τῆς χάριτος ἐνυβρίσας;
26For if we go on sinning willfully after receiving the full knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, 27but only a certain fearful expectation of judgment and a fury of fire that is about to consume the adversaries. 28Anyone who set aside the Law of Moses died without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. 29How much worse punishment do you think he will deserve who has trampled underfoot the Son of God, and has regarded as common the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and has insulted the Spirit of grace?
30For we know the One who said:
  “Vengeance is Mine; I will repay.” {Deut. 32:35}
And again:
  “The Lord will judge His people.” {Deut. 32:36}
31It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.
Remembering Past Endurance
32But remember the former days, in which, after being enlightened, you endured a hard struggle with sufferings. 33On the one hand, you were made a public spectacle through insults and afflictions; on the other hand, you became partners with those who were treated this way. 34For you showed sympathy to those in prison and accepted the seizure of your possessions with joy, knowing that you yourselves have a better and lasting possession.
35Therefore, do not throw away your confidence, which has a great reward. 36For you have need of patient endurance, so that when you have done the will of God, you may receive the promise.
The Call to Faith, Not Shrinking Back
  37For yet “in a very, very little while,
the One who is coming will come and will not delay.
38But My righteous one shall live by faith;
and if he shrinks back,
My soul has no pleasure in him.
” {Hab. 2:3-4 LXX}
39But we are not of those who shrink back to destruction, but of those who have faith for the preservation of the soul.
