Chapter 11
The Nature of Faith
1Now faith is the substantial reality of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. 2For by it the men of old gained approval.
3By faith we understand that the worlds were prepared by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible.
Faith from Abel to Noah
4By faith Abel offered to God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, through which he was witnessed to be righteous, God Himself witnessing to his gifts; and through his faith, though he died, he still speaks. 5By faith Enoch was taken up so that he would not see death, and he was not found because God took him up. {Gen. 5:24} For before his removal, he was witnessed to have been well-pleasing to God. {Gen. 5:22} 6And without faith it is impossible to be well-pleasing; for the one who approaches God must believe that He exists and that He becomes a rewarder of those who earnestly seek Him. 7By faith Noah, being warned about things not yet seen, in godly fear prepared an ark for the salvation of his household, through which he condemned the world and became an heir of the righteousness that comes according to faith.
The Faith of Abraham and Sarah
8By faith Abraham, when he was called, obeyed by going out to a place which he was to receive as an inheritance; and he went out, not knowing where he was going. 9By faith he lived as a foreigner in the land of promise as in a foreign land, dwelling in tents with Isaac and Jacob, the fellow-heirs of the same promise. 10For he was looking forward to the city that has foundations, whose architect and builder is God.
11By faith Sarah herself, even though she was barren, received power for the conception of seed even beyond the proper time of life, since she regarded the One who promised as faithful. 12Therefore from one man—and him as good as dead—there were born descendants as numerous as the stars of heaven and as the countless sand by the seashore.
Living as Foreigners for a Heavenly Home
13All these died in faith, without having received the promises; instead, they saw them from a distance and welcomed them, and they confessed that they were strangers and temporary residents on the earth. 14For those who say such things make it clear that they are seeking a homeland. 15And indeed, if they had been thinking of that land from which they had gone out, they would have had opportunity to return. 16But as it is, they long for a better one—that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for He has prepared a city for them.
The Faith of the Patriarchs
17By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac; and he who had welcomed the promises was in the act of offering up his only son, 18concerning whom it had been said, “Through Isaac shall your offspring be named.” {Gen. 21:12} 19He reasoned that God was able to raise people even from the dead, from which—to speak figuratively—he did receive him back.
20By faith Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau, even concerning things to come. 21By faith Jacob, as he was dying, blessed each of the sons of Joseph and bowed in worship over the top of his staff. {Gen. 47:31 LXX} 22By faith Joseph, at the end of his life, made mention of the exodus of the sons of Israel and gave instructions concerning his bones.
The Faith of Moses and the Exodus
23By faith Moses, after he was born, was hidden for three months by his parents, because they saw the child was beautiful, and they were not afraid of the king’s edict. 24By faith Moses, when he had grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter, 25choosing instead to be mistreated along with the people of God rather than to enjoy the fleeting pleasure of sin. 26He regarded the reproach of Christ as greater wealth than the treasures of Egypt, for he was looking ahead to the reward. 27By faith he left Egypt, not fearing the king’s anger; for he persevered as one seeing Him who is invisible. 28By faith he kept the Passover and the sprinkling of blood, so that the destroyer of the firstborn would not touch them. 29By faith they passed through the Red Sea as if on dry land, but when the Egyptians attempted it, they were swallowed up. 30By faith the walls of Jericho fell, after being encircled for seven days. 31By faith Rahab the prostitute did not perish with those who were disobedient, because she had welcomed the spies with peace.
The Triumph and Suffering of the Faithful
32And what more shall I say? For time would fail me if I tell of Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, of David and Samuel and the prophets, 33who through faith conquered kingdoms, administered justice, obtained promises, shut the mouths of lions, 34quenched the power of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, were made strong out of weakness, became mighty in war, and put foreign armies to flight. 35Women received back their dead by resurrection. Others, however, were tortured, refusing to accept release so that they might obtain a better resurrection; 36and others experienced mockings and scourgings, and even chains and imprisonment. 37They were stoned, they were sawn in two, they were put to death by the sword. They went about in sheepskins and goatskins, destitute, afflicted, mistreated— 38of whom the world was not worthy—wandering in deserts and mountains, and in caves and holes in the ground.
The Unfinished Story
39And all these, though they were commended through their faith, did not receive what was promised, 40since God had provided something better for us, so that apart from us they should not be made perfect.
