Chapter 12
Running the Race of Faith
1Therefore, since we also have such a great cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us lay aside every weight and the sin that so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race set before us, 2fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of our faith, who for the sake of the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising its shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3For consider Him who has endured such hostility from sinners against Himself, so that you do not grow weary and lose heart in your souls.
The Discipline of a Father
4You have not yet resisted to the point of shedding blood in your struggle against sin. 5And you have forgotten the exhortation which addresses you as sons:
  “My son, do not think lightly of the Lord’s discipline,
nor lose heart when you are rebuked by Him;
6for the Lord disciplines the one He loves,
and He scourges every son whom He receives.
” {Prov. 3:11-12}
7Endure for the sake of discipline; God is dealing with you as with sons. For what son is there whom a father does not discipline? 8But if you are without discipline, in which everyone has shared, then you are illegitimate children and not sons. 9Furthermore, we had our earthly fathers to discipline us, and we respected them; shall we not much more be subject to the Father of spirits and live? 10For they disciplined us for a short time as seemed best to them, but He does so for our benefit, so that we may share in His holiness. 11For the moment, all discipline seems not to be joyful but painful; yet later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.
12Therefore, lift up your drooping hands and strengthen your paralyzed knees, 13and make straight paths for your feet, so that the limb which is lame may not be put out of joint, but rather be healed.
A Warning Against Bitterness
14Pursue peace with everyone, and the holiness without which no one will see the Lord. 15See to it that no one falls short of the grace of God; that no “root of bitterness” springing up causes trouble, and through it many become defiled; 16that no one be sexually immoral or godless like Esau, who for a single meal sold his own birthright. 17For you know that even afterward, when he desired to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, for he found no place for repentance, though he sought it with tears.
Two Mountains: Sinai vs. Zion
18For you have not approached something that can be touched—a blazing fire, and darkness, and gloom, and a whirlwind, 19and the blast of a trumpet, and a voice of spoken words, which those who heard begged that no further word be added to them. 20For they could not endure the command: “If even a beast touches the mountain, it shall be stoned.” {Ex. 19:12-13} 21And so terrifying was the spectacle that Moses said, “I am full of fear and trembling.” {Deut. 9:19}
22But you have approached Mount Zion and the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to myriads of angels in festive gathering, 23and to the assembly of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of the righteous who have been made perfect, 24and to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks better than the blood of Abel.
The Final Shaking
25 Βλέπετε μὴ παραιτήσησθε τὸν λαλοῦντα· εἰ γὰρ ἐκεῖνοι οὐκ ἐξέφυγον ἐπὶ γῆς παραιτησάμενοι τὸν χρηματίζοντα, πολὺ μᾶλλον ἡμεῖς οἱ τὸν ἀπ' οὐρανῶν ἀποστρεφόμενοι, 26 οὗ ἡ φωνὴ τὴν γῆν ἐσάλευσεν τότε, νῦν δὲ ἐπήγγελται λέγων, Ἔτι ἅπαξ ἐγὼ σείσω οὐ μόνον τὴν γῆν ἀλλὰ καὶ τὸν οὐρανόν. {Haggai 2:6}
25 See to it that you do not refuse the One who is speaking. For if those people did not escape when they refused the one who warned them on earth, how much less will we, if we turn away from the One who warns from heaven? 26At that time His voice shook the earth, but now He has promised, saying: “Yet once more I will shake not only the earth but also the sky.”
27Now this phrase, “Yet once more,” indicates the removal of the things that are being shaken—that is, created things—so that the things that cannot be shaken may remain. 28Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us have grace, through which we may offer acceptable worship to God with godly fear and awe; 29for indeed, our God is a consuming fire.
