Chapter 4
Standing Firm and Resolving Conflict
1Therefore, my brothers, whom I love and long for, my joy and my crown, stand firm in the Lord in this way, my beloved.
2I urge Euodia and I urge Syntyche to be of the same mind in the Lord. 3Yes, and I ask you also, true companion, help these women, since they struggled alongside me in the gospel, together with Clement and the rest of my fellow workers, whose names are in the Book of Life.
The Secret of Peace
4Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice! 5Let your gentle spirit be known to all people. The Lord is near. 6Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and petition with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. 7And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
The Christian Mindset
8Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise—think on these things. 9The things which you learned and received and heard and saw in me, practice these things; and the God of peace will be with you.
The Secret of Contentment
10I rejoiced in the Lord greatly that now at last you have caused your concern for me to blossom again; indeed, you were concerned before, but you lacked the opportunity to show it. 11Not that I am speaking from a position of need, for I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am. 12I know how to be brought low, and I know how to have an abundance; in any and every circumstance I have learned the secret—both of being well-fed and of going hungry, both of having an abundance and of suffering need. 13I have strength for all things through the One who empowers me. 14Nevertheless, you did well by becoming partners in my affliction.
Gratitude for the Philippians’ Gift
15And you Philippians yourselves know that in the beginning of the gospel, when I departed from Macedonia, not a single church partnered with me in the matter of giving and receiving except you alone; 16for even in Thessalonica, you sent a gift more than once for my need. 17Not that I am seeking the gift itself, but I am seeking the profit that increases to your account. 18But I have received full payment for everything and I have an abundance; I am richly supplied, having received from Epaphroditus the things you sent—a fragrant aroma, an acceptable sacrifice, well-pleasing to God. 19And my God will fully supply every need of yours according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus. 20Now to our God and Father be the glory forever and ever, amen.
Final Greetings
21Greet every saint in Christ Jesus. The brothers who are with me greet you. 22All the saints greet you, especially those of Caesar’s household. 23The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit.
