Chapter 1
Greeting to the Faith-Sharers
1Simeon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, to those who have received a faith of equal standing to ours through the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ: 2May grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.
The Divine Nature and the Golden Chain of Virtue
3For His divine power has granted to us all things pertaining to life and godliness through the knowledge of the One who called us by His own glory and excellence. 4Through these He has granted to us His precious and magnificent promises, so that through them you might become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world because of evil desire. 5For this very reason, making every effort, supplement your faith with excellence, and excellence with knowledge, 6and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with endurance, and endurance with godliness, 7and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love.
8For if these things are yours and are increasing, they keep you from being useless or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9For whoever lacks these things is blind, being nearsighted, having forgotten the cleansing of his past sins. 10Therefore, brothers and sisters, be all the more diligent to make your calling and election sure, for by doing these things you will never stumble. 11For in this way, the entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ will be richly provided for you.
A Farewell Legacy
12Therefore, I will always intend to remind you of these things, even though you know them and are established in the truth that is present with you. 13I consider it right, as long as I am in this “tent,” to wake you up by way of reminder, 14since I know that the laying aside of my tent is coming quickly, just as our Lord Jesus Christ made clear to me. 15And I will make every effort so that after my departure you may be able at any time to recall these things.
Eyewitnesses and the Prophetic Lamp
16For we did not follow cleverly concocted myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of His majesty. 17For when He received honor and glory from God the Father, and a voice like this was borne to Him by the Majestic Glory: “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well-pleased”— 18we ourselves heard this voice borne from heaven when we were with Him on the holy mountain.
19And we have the prophetic word made more sure, to which you do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts. 20Know this first: that no prophecy of Scripture comes from one’s own interpretation. 21For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.
