Chapter 2
Warning Against Drifting
| 1For this reason, it is necessary for us to pay much closer attention to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away. 2For if the word spoken through angels proved to be binding, and every transgression and act of disobedience received a just penalty, 3how shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation? This salvation, having first been spoken through the Lord, was confirmed to us by those who heard Him, 4while God added His witness by signs and wonders and various miracles and by distributions of the Holy Spirit according to His own will. |
The Humanity of the Son

Οὐ
γὰρ
τὴν
τὴν
ἧς
6
δὲ
πού
τις
Τί
ὅτι
ἐν
τῷ
γὰρ
τὰ
νῦν
δὲ
τὰ
{Psalm 8:5-7 LXX} |
|
5For He did not subject the coming world, about which we are speaking, to angels.
6But someone has testified somewhere, saying:
“What is man, that You are mindful of him,
Now in subjecting all things to him, He left nothing that is not subject to him. But at present, we do not yet see all things subjected to him.
or a son of man, that You care for him? 7You made him lower than the angels for a little while; You crowned him with glory and honor. 8You put all things in subjection under his feet.” {Psalm 8:5-7 LXX} |
| 9But we do see Jesus—who was made lower than the angels for a little while—now crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God He might taste death for everyone. |
|
10For it was fitting for Him, for whom are all things and through whom are all things, in bringing many sons to glory, to make the founder of their salvation perfect through sufferings.
11For both the One who sanctifies and those who are being sanctified are all from one [Father]; for this reason He is not ashamed to call them brothers,
12saying:
“I will proclaim Your name to my brothers;
13And again:
in the midst of the congregation I will sing Your praise.” {Psalm 22:22}
“I will put my trust in Him.”
{Isa. 8:17 LXX}
And again:
“Behold, I and the children God has given me.”
{Isa. 8:18}
|
| 14Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, He Himself likewise shared in the same things, so that through death He might destroy the one who holds the power of death—that is, the devil— 15and set free those who through fear of death were subject to slavery all their lives. 16For surely it is not angels He helps, but He helps the offspring of Abraham. 17Therefore, He had to be made like His brothers in every respect, so that He might become a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make atonement for the sins of the people. 18For because He Himself has suffered when being tempted, He is able to help those who are being tempted. |
