Greeting
1Jude, a slave of Jesus Christ and brother of James, to those who are called, beloved in God the Father and kept for Jesus Christ: 2May mercy, peace, and love be multiplied to you.
The Occasion for the Letter
3Beloved, while making every effort to write to you concerning our common salvation, I found it necessary to write to you, appealing to you to contend for the faith that was once for all handed down to the saints. 4For certain people have crept in unnoticed—those who were long ago designated for this condemnation—ungodly ones, turning the grace of our God into sensuality and denying our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ.
Three Types of Judgment
5Now I desire to remind you, though you know all things, that the Lord, having once saved a people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed those who did not believe. 6And angels who did not keep their own domain but abandoned their proper dwelling, He has kept in eternal bonds under gloom for the judgment of the great day, 7just as Sodom and Gomorrah and the cities around them, which in a similar manner to these indulged in sexual immorality and went after strange flesh, are set forth as an example, undergoing the punishment of eternal fire.
The Character of the Infiltrators
8Nevertheless, in the same way, these dreamers also defile the flesh, reject authority, and blaspheme glorious beings. 9But when Michael the archangel, disputing with the devil, was arguing about the body of Moses, he did not dare to bring a judgment of blasphemy against him but said, “The Lord rebuke you.” 10But these people blaspheme whatever they do not understand, and whatever they do know by instinct, like unreasoning animals, by these things they are destroyed.
11Woe to them! For they walked in the way of Cain, and for profit they poured themselves into Balaam’s error, and they perished in Korah’s rebellion. 12These are the “hidden reefs” at your love-feasts, feasting together fearlessly, shepherding themselves; waterless clouds carried along by winds; late-autumn trees without fruit, twice dead, uprooted; 13wild waves of the sea foaming up their own shames; wandering stars for whom the gloom of darkness has been reserved forever.
The Prophecy of Enoch
14And Enoch, the seventh from Adam, also prophesied regarding these people, saying: “Behold, the Lord came with myriads of His holy ones 15to execute judgment against all and to convict every soul concerning all their deeds of ungodliness which they committed in an ungodly way, and concerning all the harsh things which ungodly sinners spoke against Him.” 16These are grumblers, fault-finders, following after their own desires; and their mouth speaks arrogant things, flattering faces for the sake of advantage.
Exhortation to the Faithful
17But you, beloved, remember the words previously spoken by the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ, 18that they were saying to you: “In the last time there will be scoffers, following after their own ungodly desires.” 19These are the ones who cause divisions, worldly-minded, not having the Spirit.
20But you, beloved, building yourselves up in your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit, 21keep yourselves in the love of God, waiting for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life. 22And have mercy on some who are wavering; 23save others by snatching them out of the fire; and on others have mercy with fear, hating even the tunic stained by the flesh.
Doxology
24Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to set you before the presence of His glory blameless with great joy, 25to the only God our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion, and authority, before all time and now and for all ages. Amen.
