Chapter 2
Warning Against Partiality
1 Ἀδελφοί μου, μὴ ἐν προσωπολημψίαις ἔχετε τὴν πίστιν τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ τῆς δόξης. 2 ἐὰν γὰρ εἰσέλθῃ εἰς συναγωγὴν ὑμῶν ἀνὴρ χρυσοδακτύλιος ἐν ἐσθῆτι λαμπρᾷ, εἰσέλθῃ δὲ καὶ πτωχὸς ἐν ῥυπαρᾷ ἐσθῆτι, 3 ἐπιβλέψητε δὲ ἐπὶ τὸν φοροῦντα τὴν ἐσθῆτα τὴν λαμπρὰν καὶ εἴπητε, Σὺ κάθου ὧδε καλῶς, καὶ τῷ πτωχῷ εἴπητε, Σὺ στῆθι ἐκεῖ ἢ κάθου ὑπὸ τὸ ὑποπόδιόν μου, 4 οὐ διεκρίθητε ἐν ἑαυτοῖς καὶ ἐγένεσθε κριταὶ διαλογισμῶν πονηρῶν;
1My brothers, do not hold the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of Glory, with acts of partiality. 2For if a man with gold rings and fine clothing enters your assembly, and a poor man in filthy clothing also enters, 3and you pay special attention to the one wearing the fine clothing and say, “You sit here in a good seat,” while you say to the poor man, “You stand there,” or “Sit here by my footstool,” 4have you not made distinctions among yourselves and become judges with evil motives?
The Royal Law and the Unity of the Law
5Listen, my beloved brothers: Did God not choose those who are poor in the eyes of the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom which He promised to those who love Him? 6But you have dishonored the poor man. Is it not the rich who oppress you and personally drag you into court? 7Do they not blaspheme the honorable Name that was invoked over you? 8If, however, you fulfill the royal law according to the Scripture, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself,” {Lev. 19:18} you are doing well.
9But if you show partiality, you are committing sin, being convicted by the law as transgressors. 10For whoever keeps the whole law yet stumbles in one point has become guilty of all of it. 11For He who said, “Do not commit adultery,” {Ex. 20:14} also said, “Do not murder.” {Ex. 20:13} Now if you do not commit adultery but you do murder, you have become a transgressor of the law. 12So speak and so act as those who are going to be judged by the law of liberty. 13For judgment is merciless to the one who has shown no mercy; mercy triumphs over judgment.
Faith Without Works is Dead
14What use is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but he does not have works? Is that “faith” able to save him? 15If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking daily food, 16and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, keep warm and eat your fill,” but you do not give them the necessities for the body, what use is it? 17In the same way also, faith—if it does not have works—is dead by itself.
The Evidence of Faith
18 Ἀλλ' ἐρεῖ τις, Σὺ πίστιν ἔχεις, κἀγὼ ἔργα ἔχω· δεῖξόν μοι τὴν πίστιν σου χωρὶς τῶν ἔργων κἀγώ σοι δείξω ἐκ τῶν ἔργων μου τὴν πίστιν. 19 σὺ πιστεύεις ὅτι εἷς ἐστιν ὁ θεὸς, καλῶς ποιεῖς· καὶ τὰ δαιμόνια πιστεύουσιν καὶ φρίσσουσιν. 20 θέλεις δὲ γνῶναι, ὦ ἄνθρωπε κενέ, ὅτι ἡ πίστις χωρὶς τῶν ἔργων ἀργή ἐστιν;
18But someone will say, “You have faith and I have works.” Show me your faith without the works, and I will show you my faith by my works. 19You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe—and they shudder! 20But are you willing to recognize, O empty man, that faith without works is useless?
21Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered up his son Isaac on the altar? 22You see that faith was working together with his works, and by the works, his faith was brought to completion. 23And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness,” {Gen. 15:6} and he was called the friend of God. [2Chron 20:7; Isa. 41:8] 24You see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone.
25 And in the same way, was not Rahab the prostitute also justified by works when she welcomed the messengers and sent them out by a different way? 26For just as the body without the spirit is dead, so also faith without works is dead.
