Chapter 66

AlexandrinusVaticanus

Heaven Is God’s Throne

1 Thus says Yahweh, The heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool: where is the house that you build to me? And where is the place of my rest?

1 οὕτως λέγει κύριος οὐρανός μοι θρόνος, δὲ γῆ ὑποπόδιον τῶν ποδῶν μου· ποῖον οἶκον οἰκοδομήσετέ μοι;
ποῖος τόπος τῆς καταπαύσεώς μου;
1 οὕτως λέγει Κύριος· οὐρανός μοι θρόνος, δὲ γῆ ὑποπόδιον τῶν ποδῶν μου· ποῖον οἶκον οἰκοδομήσετέ μοι;
καὶ ποῖος τόπος τῆς καταπαύσεώς μου;
1 Thus says the Lord: Heaven is my throne, and the earth is the footstool of my feet; what kind of house will you build for me, or of what kind will be the place of my rest? 1 Thus says the Lord: Heaven is my throne, and the earth is the footstool of my feet; what kind of house will you build for me, or of what kind will be the place of my rest?

2 For all those things has my hand made, and those things have been, says Yahweh; but to this man will I look, even to him who is poor and of a contrite spirit, and trembles at my word.

2 πάντα γὰρ ταῦτα ἐποίησεν χείρ μου, καὶ ἔστιν ἐμὰ πάντα ταῦτα, λέγει κύριος· καὶ ἐπὶ τίνα ἐπιβλέψω ἀλλ’ ἐπὶ τὸν ταπεινὸν καὶ ἡσύχιον καὶ τρέμοντα τοὺς λόγους μου; 2 πάντας γὰρ ταῦτα ἐποίησεν χείρ μου, καὶ ἐστιν ἐμὰ πάντα ταῦτα, λέγει Κύριος· καὶ ἐπὶ τίνα ἐπιβλέψω, ἀλλ’ ἐπὶ τὸν ταπεινὸν καὶ ἡσύχιον καὶ τρέμοντα τοὺς λόγους μου;
2 For my hand has made all these things, and all these things are mine, says the Lord.
And to whom will I look but to the one who is humble and quiet and trembles at my words?
2 For my hand has made all these things, and all these things are mine, says the Lord.
And to whom will I look but to the one who is humble and quiet and trembles at my words?

Hypocrisy Rebuked

3 He who kills an ox is as if he killed a man; he who sacrifices a lamb, as if he cut off a dog’s neck; he who offers an oblation, as if he offered swine’s blood; he who burns incense, as if he blessed an idol. Yes, they have chosen their own ways, and their soul delights in their abominations.

3 But the lawless who sacrifices a calf to me is like one who kills a dog, and he who offers fine flour, like someone who offers swine’s blood; he who has given frankincense for a memorial, like a blasphemer.
And these have chosen their own ways and their abominations, which their soul wanted;
3 But the lawless who sacrifices a calf to me is like one who kills a dog, and he who offers fine flour, like someone who offers swine’s blood; he who has given frankincense for a memorial, like a blasphemer.
And these have chosen their own ways and their abominations, which their soul wanted;

4 I also will choose their delusions, and will bring their fears on them; because when I called, none did answer; when I spoke, they didn’t hear; but they did evil before my eyes, and chose that in which I delighted not.

4 and I will choose mockeries for them and repay them their sins, because I called them and they didn’t answer me, I spoke and they didn’t hear, and they did what was evil in my sight and chose the things I didn’t want. 4 and I will choose mockeries for them and repay them their sins, because I called them and they didn’t answer me, I spoke and they didn’t hear, and they did what was evil in my sight and chose the things I didn’t want.

5 Hear the word of Yahweh, you who tremble at his word; your brothers that hated you, that cast you out for my name’s sake, said, Let Yahweh be glorified; but he shall appear to your joy, and they shall be ashamed.

5 Hear the word of the Lord, you who tremble at his word; speak, our brothers, to those who hate us and make abominable in order that the name of the Lord may be glorified and seen in their gladness, but those shall be ashamed. 5 Hear the word of the Lord, you who tremble at his word; speak, our brothers, to those who hate us and make abominable in order that the name of the Lord may be glorified and seen in their gladness, but those shall be ashamed.

6 A voice of noise from the city, a voice from the temple, a voice of Yahweh that renders recompense to his enemies.

6 A voice of crying from the city! A voice from the temple! The voice of the Lord, repaying compensation to his adversaries! 6 A voice of crying from the city! A voice from the temple! The voice of the Lord, repaying compensation to his adversaries!

7 Before she travailed, she brought forth; before her pain came, she was delivered of a man child.

7 Before she who was in labour gave birth, before the pain of her pangs came, she escaped and gave birth to a male. 7 Before she who was in labour gave birth, before the pain of her pangs came, she escaped and gave birth to a male.

8 Who has heard such a thing? Who has seen such things? Shall the earth be made to bring forth in one day? Or shall a nation be born at once? For as soon as Zion travailed, she brought forth her children.

8 τίς ἤκουσεν τοιοῦτο, καὶ τίς ἑώρακεν οὕτως;
ὤδινεν γῆ ἐν μιᾷ ἡμέρᾳ, καὶ ἐτέχθη ἔθνος εἰς ἅπαξ;
8 τίς ἤκουσε τοιοῦτο, καὶ τίς ἑώρακεν οὕτως;
ὤδινε γῆ ἐν ἡμέρᾳ μιᾷ, καὶ ἐτέχθη ἔθνος εἰς ἅπαξ;
8 Who has heard such a thing? And who has seen thus? Did the ground give birth in one day? And was a nation born all at once? Because Siōn was in labour and she gave birth to her children. 8 Who has heard such a thing? And who has seen thus? Did the ground give birth in one day? And was a nation born all at once? Because Siōn was in labour and she gave birth to her children.

9 Shall I bring to the birth, and not cause to bring forth? Says Yahweh: shall I cause to bring forth, and shut the womb? Says your God.

οὐκ ἰδοὺ ἐγὼ γεννῶσαν καὶ στεῖραν ἐποίησα;
οὐκ ἰδοὺ ἐγὼ γεννῶσαν καὶ στεῖραν ἐποίησα;
9 But I gave this expectation, and you didn’t remember me, said the Lord; Look! Was it not I who made the woman who gives birth and the one who is barren? Said God. 9 But I gave this expectation, and you didn’t remember me, said the Lord; Look! Was it not I who made the woman who gives birth and the one who is barren? Said God.

Joy in Jerusalem’s Future

10 Rejoice you with Jerusalem, and be glad with her, all you who love her: rejoice for joy with her, all you who mourn for her.

10 Rejoice, Oh Jerousalēm, and celebrate a festival in her, all you who love her; rejoice with joy, all you who mourn over her 10 Rejoice, Oh Jerousalēm, and celebrate a festival in her, all you who love her; rejoice with joy, all you who mourn over her

11 That you may suck, and be satisfied with the breasts of her consolations; that you may milk out, and be delighted with the abundance of her glory.

11 in order that you may nurse and be satisfied from her comforting breast, in order that by much nursing you may take delight from the entrance to her glory. 11 in order that you may nurse and be satisfied from her comforting breast, in order that by much nursing you may take delight from the entrance to her glory.

12 For thus says Yahweh, Behold, I will extend peace to her like a river, and the glory of the Gentiles like a flowing stream: then you shall suck, you shall be carried on her sides, and be dandled on her knees.

12 Because this is what the Lord says. Look! I myself turn to them like a river of peace, and like a stream overflowing the glory of nations; their children shall be carried on shoulders and comforted on knees. 12 Because this is what the Lord says. Look! I myself turn to them like a river of peace, and like a stream overflowing the glory of nations; their children shall be carried on shoulders and comforted on knees.

13 As one whom his mother comforts, so will I comfort you; and you shall be comforted in Jerusalem.

13 As a mother will comfort someone, so also I will comfort you, and you shall be comforted in Jerousalēm. 13 As a mother will comfort someone, so also I will comfort you, and you shall be comforted in Jerousalēm.

14 And when you see this, your heart shall rejoice, and your bones shall flourish like a herb; and the hand of Yahweh shall be known toward his servants, and his indignation toward his enemies.

14 You shall see, and your heart shall rejoice, and your bones shall grow like grass, and the hand of the Lord shall be known to those who worship him, and he shall threaten those who disobey him. 14 You shall see, and your heart shall rejoice, and your bones shall grow like grass, and the hand of the Lord shall be known to those who worship him, and he shall threaten those who disobey him.

15 For, behold, Yahweh will come with fire, and with his chariots like a whirlwind, to render his anger with fury, and his rebuke with flames of fire.

15 Look! For the Lord will come like fire, and his chariots like a storm, to give back vengeance with wrath and punishment with a flame of fire. 15 Look! For the Lord will come like fire, and his chariots like a storm, to give back vengeance with wrath and punishment with a flame of fire.

16 For by fire and by his sword will Yahweh plead with all flesh; and the slain of Yahweh shall be many.

16 For by the fire of the Lord shall all the land be judged, and all flesh by his sword; many shall be wounded by the Lord. 16 For by the fire of the Lord shall all the land be judged, and all flesh by his sword; many shall be wounded by the Lord.

17 They who consecrate themselves, and purify themselves in the gardens behind one tree in the midst, eating swine’s flesh, and the abomination, and the mouse, shall be consumed together, says Yahweh.

17 Those who consecrate and purify themselves for the gardens and who in the thresholds eat swine’s flesh, the abominations, and the mouse shall be consumed together, said the Lord. 17 Those who consecrate and purify themselves for the gardens and who in the thresholds eat swine’s flesh, the abominations, and the mouse shall be consumed together, said the Lord.

18 For I know their works and their thoughts: it shall come, that I will gather all nations and tongues; and they shall come, and see my glory.

18 And I understand their works and their rationale; I am coming to gather all the nations and tongues, and they shall come and shall see my glory. 18 And I understand their works and their rationale; I am coming to gather all the nations and tongues, and they shall come and shall see my glory.

19 And I will set a sign among them, and I will send those who escape of them to the nations, to Tarshish, Pul, and Lud, that draw the bow, to Tubal, and Javan, to the isles afar off, that haven’t heard my fame, neither have seen my glory; and they shall declare my glory among the Gentiles.

19 And I will leave signs on them, and from them I will send out those who have been saved to the nations, to Tharsis and Phoud and Loud and Mosoch and Thobel and to Greece and to the islands far away–those who have not heard my name or seen my glory, and they shall declare my glory among the nations. 19 And I will leave signs on them, and from them I will send out those who have been saved to the nations, to Tharsis and Phoud and Loud and Mosoch and Thobel and to Greece and to the islands far away–those who have not heard my name or seen my glory, and they shall declare my glory among the nations.

20 And they shall bring all your brothers for an offering to Yahweh out of all nations on horses, and in chariots, and in litters, and on mules, and on swift beasts, to my holy mountain Jerusalem, says Yahweh, as the sons of Israēl bring an offering in a clean vessel into the house of Yahweh.

20 They shall bring your brothers from all the nations as a gift to the Lord, with horses and chariots, in mule-drawn covered chariots with canopy, into the holy city Jerousalēm, said the Lord, so that the sons of Israēl may bring to me their sacrifices with psalms into the house of the Lord.

21 And I will also take of them for priests and for Levites, says Yahweh.

21 And I will take some of them as priests and as Levites for myself, says the Lord. 21 And I will take some of them as priests and as Levites for myself, says the Lord.

22 For as the new heavens and the new earth, which I will make, shall remain before me, says Yahweh, so shall your seed and your name remain.

22 For as the new sky and the new land, which I am making, remain before me, says the Lord, so shall your offspring and your name stand. 22 For as the new sky and the new land, which I am making, remain before me, says the Lord, so shall your offspring and your name stand.

23 And it will happen, that from one new moon to another, and from one sabbath to another, shall all flesh come to worship before me, says Yahweh.

23 And it shall be that month after month and sabbath after sabbath all flesh shall come before me to do obeisance in Jerousalēm, said the Lord. 23 And it shall be that month after month and sabbath after sabbath all flesh shall come before me to do obeisance in Jerousalēm, said the Lord.

24 And they shall go forth, and look on the carcasses of the men who have transgressed against me; for their worm shall not die, neither shall their fire be quenched; and they shall be an abhorring to all flesh.

24 And they shall go out and see the corpses of the men who have transgressed against me; for their worm shall not die and their fire shall not be extinguished and they shall become a spectacle to all flesh. 24 And they shall go out and see the corpses of the men who have transgressed against me; for their worm shall not die and their fire shall not be extinguished and they shall become a spectacle to all flesh.
