Chapter 59
The Barrier of Sin
1 Is the Lord’s hand not strong enough to save? Or has He made His ear heavy so as not to hear? 2 But your sins stand as a divider between you and God, and because of your sins He has turned His face away from you so as not to have mercy. 3 For your hands are defiled with blood and your fingers in sins; and your lips have spoken lawlessness, and your tongue meditates on unrighteousness.
The Anatomy of Corruption
4 No one speaks what is just, nor is there true judgment; they have trusted in vanities and speak empty things, for they conceive toil and bring forth lawlessness. 5 They broke the eggs of asps and they weave a spider’s web; and the one about to eat of their eggs, having crushed [it], found it rotten, and in it was a basilisk. 6 Their web shall not become a garment, nor shall they clothe themselves with their works; for their works are works of lawlessness. 7 And their feet run toward wickedness, swift to shed blood; and their thoughts are thoughts of the foolish; destruction and wretchedness are in their ways. 8 and they do not know the way of peace, and there is no judgment in their ways; for the paths they travel are perverted, and they do not know peace.
A People Groping in Darkness
9 Because of this, judgment has departed from them, and righteousness shall by no means overtake them; while they waited for light, darkness came upon them; having waited for brightness, they walked in gloom. 10 They shall grope for the wall like blind men, and they shall grope as if there were no eyes; and they shall fall at midday as at midnight; they shall groan as those who are dying. 11 They shall go together like a bear and a dove; we waited for judgment, and it is not; salvation has departed far from us.
Confession of the Community
12 For our lawlessness is great before You, and our sins have stood against us; for our lawless deeds are in us, and we have known our unrighteous acts. 13 We acted impiously and we lied, and we turned away from following after our God; we spoke unjust things and were disobedient; we conceived and meditated from our heart unjust words. 14 And we turned judgment backward, and righteousness has stood far off, because truth was consumed in their ways, and they were not able to pass through by a straight path. 15 And truth has been taken away, and they have removed their mind from understanding.
The Divine Warrior
And the Lord saw, and it did not please Him, because there was no judgment. 16 And He saw and there was no man, and He perceived and there was no one to help; so He defended them with His own arm and stayed them with His mercy. 17 And He put on righteousness as a breastplate and placed a helmet of salvation upon His head, and He wrapped Himself in a garment of vengeance and His cloak, 18 as one who will repay a repayment of reproach to the adversaries. 19 And those from the west shall fear the name of the Lord, and those from the rising of the sun His glorious name; for the wrath from the Lord shall come like a violent river, it shall come with fury.
20 And the Redeemer shall come for the sake of Zion and shall turn away impieties from Jacob. 21 "And this is the covenant from Me to them," said the Lord; "My Spirit, which is upon you, and the words which I have put in your mouth, shall by no means fail from your mouth, nor from the mouth of your seed," for the Lord has spoken, "from now and forever."
