Chapter 4
The Call to Unity
1I, therefore, the prisoner in the Lord, urge you to walk worthily of the calling to which you were called, 2with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, 3making every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. 4There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called in one hope of your calling; 5one Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.
Spiritual Gifts and the Maturity of the Body
7But to each one of us grace was given according to the measure of Christ’s gift. 8Therefore it says:
  “When He ascended on high,
He led a host of captives,
and He gave gifts to people.
” {Ps. 68:18}
9Now, what does “He ascended” mean, except that He also descended into the lower parts of the earth? 10The one who descended is the very one who also ascended far above all the heavens, so that He might fill all things.
11And He Himself gave some as apostles, some as prophets, some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers, 12for the equipping of the holy ones for the work of ministry, for the building up of the body of Christ, 13until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the full knowledge of the Son of God, to a mature man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.
14We are to do this so that we may no longer be infants, tossed by waves and carried about by every wind of teaching, by the trickery of people, by craftiness in deceitful scheming. 15Rather, speaking the truth in love, let us grow up in all things into Him who is the head, Christ, 16from whom the whole body—being fitted and held together by every supporting ligament, according to the working in measure of each individual part—brings about the growth of the body for the building up of itself in love.
The New Way of Life
17This, therefore, I say and testify in the Lord: that you must no longer walk as the Gentiles also walk, in the futility of their mind, 18being darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the hardening of their heart. 19Having become callous, they gave themselves over to sensuality for the practice of every kind of impurity with greediness.
20But you did not learn Christ in this way! 21If indeed you heard Him and were taught in Him, just as truth is in Jesus, 22that you are to lay aside—with respect to your former way of life—the old man, which is being corrupted according to deceitful desires, 23and to be renewed in the spirit of your mind, 24and to put on the new man, which was created according to God’s likeness in the righteousness and holiness of the truth.
Specific Rules for the New Life
25 Therefore, having laid aside falsehood, “let each of you speak truth with his neighbor,” {Zech. 8:16} because we are members of one another. 26“Be angry and yet do not sin”; {Ps. 4:4} do not let the sun go down on your provocation, 27and do not give an opportunity to the devil. 28The one who steals must steal no longer, but rather let him labor, working with his own hands at what is good, so that he may have something to share with the one who has need.
29Let no rotten word proceed from your mouth, but only such as is good for building up as the need may be, so that it may give grace to those who hear. 30And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31Let all bitterness and rage and anger and shouting and slander be removed from you, along with all malice. 32Become kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also forgave you.
