Chapter 18

AlexandrinusVaticanus

Birth of Isaac Promised

1 And Yahweh appeared to him in the plains of Mamre; and he sat in the tent door in the heat of the day;

1 And God appeared to him by the oak of Mambrē, as he sat by the door of his tent at noon. 1 And God appeared to him by the oak of Mambrē, as he sat by the door of his tent at noon.

2 And he lift up his eyes and looked, and, lo, three men stood by him; and when he saw them, he ran to meet them from the tent door, and bowed himself toward the ground,

2 Looking up with his eyes, he saw and lo! three men stood before him; and on seeing them, he ran from the door of his tent to meet them, and did obeisance on the ground. 2 Looking up with his eyes, he saw and lo! three men stood before him; and on seeing them, he ran from the door of his tent to meet them, and did obeisance on the ground.

3 And said, “My Lord, if now I have found favour in your sight, don’t pass away, please, from your servant.

3 And he said, “Lord, if indeed I have found grace before you, don’t pass by your servant.” 3 And he said, “Lord, if indeed I have found grace before you, don’t pass by your servant.”

4 Let a little water, please, be fetched, and wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree.

4 Please let water be brought, and wash your feet, and cool off under the tree. 4 Please let water be brought, and wash your feet, and cool off under the tree.

5 And I will fetch a morsel of bread, and comfort your hearts; after that you shall pass on; for therefore are you come to your servant.” And they said, “So do, as you have said.”

5 “And I will bring bread, and you shall eat, and after this you shall depart on your trip, since you have turned aside to your servant. ” And he said, “Do so, as you have said.” 5 “And I will bring bread, and you shall eat, and after this you shall depart on your trip, since you have turned aside to your servant.” And he said, “Do so, as you have said.”

6 And Abraham hurried into the tent to Sarah, and said, “Make ready quickly three measures of fine meal, knead it, and make cakes on the hearth.”

6 And Abraham hurried into the tent to Sarra, and said to her, “Hurry, and mix three measures of fine flour, and make cakes.” 6 And Abraham hurried into the tent to Sarra, and said to her, “Hurry, and mix three measures of fine flour, and make cakes.”

7 And Abraham ran to the herd, and fetched a calf tender and good, and gave it to a young man; and he hurried to dress it.

7 And Abraham ran to the oxen, and took a young calf, tender and good, and gave it to his servant, and he hurried to prepare it. 7 And Abraham ran to the oxen, and took a young calf, tender and good, and gave it to his servant, and he hurried to prepare it.

8 And he took butter, and milk, and the calf which he had dressed, and set it before them; and he stood by them under the tree, and they ate.

8 And he took butter and milk, and the calf which he had prepared; and he set them before them, and they ate, and he stood by them under the tree. 8 And he took butter and milk, and the calf which he had prepared; and he set them before them, and they ate, and he stood by them under the tree.

9 And they said to him, “Where is Sarah your wife?” And he said, “Behold, in the tent.”

9 εἶπεν δὲ πρὸς αὐτόν, ποῦ Σάρρα γυνή σου;
9 Εἶπε δὲ πρὸς αὐτόν· ποῦ Σάρρα γυνή σου;
9 And he said to him, “Where is Sarra your wife?” And he answered and said, “Look! in the tent.” 9 And he said to him, “Where is Sarra your wife?” And he answered and said, “Look! in the tent.”

10 And he said, “I will certainly return to you according to the time of life; and, lo, Sarah your wife shall have a son.” And Sarah heard it in the tent door, which was behind him.

10 And he said, “I will return and come to you according to this time of season, and Sarra your wife will have a son.” And Sarra listened at the door of the tent, being behind him. 10 And he said, “I will return and come to you according to this time of season, and Sarra your wife will have a son.” And Sarra listened at the door of the tent, being behind him.

11 Now Abraham and Sarah were old and well stricken in age; and it ceased to be with Sarah after the manner of women.

11 And Abraham and Sarra were old, advanced in days, but menstruation happened to cease with Sarra. 11 And Abraham and Sarra were old, advanced in days, but menstruation happened to cease with Sarra.

12 Therefore Sarah laughed within herself, saying, “After I am waxed old shall I have pleasure, my lord being old also?”

12 And Sarra laughed within herself, saying, “The thing hasn’t as yet happened to me, even until now, and my lord is old.” 12 And Sarra laughed within herself, saying, “The thing hasn’t as yet happened to me, even until now, and my lord is old.”

13 And Yahweh said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh, saying, ‘Shall I of a surety bear a child, who am old?’

13 καὶ εἶπεν κύριος πρὸς Ἁβραάμ, τί ὅτι ἐγέλασεν Σάρρα ἐν ἑαυτῇ λέγουσα, ἆρά γε ἀληθῶς τέξομαι;
13 καὶ εἶπε Κύριος πρὸς Ἁβραάμ· τί ὅτι ἐγέλασε Σάρρα ἐν ἑαυτῇ, λέγουσα· ἆρά γε ἀληθῶς τέξομαι;
13 And the Lord said to Abraham, “Why did Sarra laugh within herself, saying, ‛Shall I then truly give birth? But I have grown old.’ 13 And the Lord said to Abraham, “Why did Sarra laugh within herself, saying, ‛Shall I then truly give birth? But I have grown old.’

14 Is anything too hard for Yahweh? At the time appointed I will return to you, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son.”

14 μὴ ἀδυνατεῖ παρὰ τῷ θεῷ ῥῆμα;
14 μὴ ἀδυνατήσει παρὰ τῷ Θεῷ ῥῆμα;
14 Is nothing impossible with God? At this time I will return to you in season, and Sarra will have a son. 14 Is nothing impossible with God? At this time I will return to you in season, and Sarra will have a son.

15 Then Sarah denied, saying, “I didn’t laugh; for she was afraid.” And he said, “No; but you did laugh.”

15 But Sarra denied, saying, “I didn’t laugh, ” for she was afraid. And he said, “No, but you did laugh.” 15 But Sarra denied, saying, “I didn’t laugh, ” for she was afraid. And he said, “No, but you did laugh.”

16 And the men rose up from there, and looked toward Sodom; and Abraham went with them to bring them on the way.

16 And after the men rose up from there, they looked down on the surface of Sodom and Gomorra. And Abraham went with them, escorting them. 16 And after the men rose up from there, they looked down on the surface of Sodom and Gomorra. And Abraham went with them, escorting them.

17 And Yahweh said, “Shall I hide from Abraham that thing which I do;

17 And the Lord said, “Shall I hide from Abraham my servant what I will do?” 17 And the Lord said, “Shall I hide from Abraham my servant what I will do?”

18 Seeing that Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him?

18 But Abraham will come to be a great and numerous nation, and in him all the nations of the earth will be blessed. 18 But Abraham will come to be a great and numerous nation, and in him all the nations of the earth will be blessed.

19 For I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of Yahweh, to do justice and judgment; that Yahweh may bring on Abraham what he has spoken of him.”

19 For I know that he will organize his sons, and his house with him, and they will keep the ways of the Lord, to do righteousness and judgment, that the Lord may bring on Abraham all things whatever he has spoken to him. 19 For I know that he will organize his sons, and his house with him, and they will keep the ways of the Lord, to do righteousness and judgment, that the Lord may bring on Abraham all things whatever he has spoken to him.

20 And Yahweh said, “Because the cry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very grievous;

20 And the Lord said, “The cry of Sodom and Gomorra has been multiplied, and their sins are very great.” 20 And the Lord said, “The cry of Sodom and Gomorrha has been multiplied towards me, and their sins are very great.”

21 I will go down now, and see whether they have done altogether according to the cry of it, which is come to me; and if not, I will know.”

21 I will go down then I will see if it corresponds with the cry which comes to me; and if not, in order that I should know. 21 I will go down then I will see if it corresponds with the cry which comes to me; and if not, in order that I should know.

22 And the men turned their faces from there, and went toward Sodom; but Abraham stood yet before Yahweh.

22 And after the men departed from there, they came to Sodom; and Abraham was still standing before the Lord. 22 And after the men departed from there, they came to Sodom; and Abraham was still standing before the Lord.

23 And Abraham drew near, and said, “Will you also destroy the righteous with the wicked?

23 καὶ ἐγγίσας Ἁβραὰμ εἶπεν, μὴ συναπολέσῃς δίκαιον μετὰ ἀσεβοῦς καὶ ἔσται δίκαιος ὡς ἀσεβής; 23 καὶ ἐγγίσας Ἁβραὰμ εἶπε· μὴ συναπολέσῃς δίκαιον μετὰ ἀσεβοῦς καὶ ἔσται δίκαιος ὡς ἀσεβής;
23 And Abraham approached and said, “You wouldn’t destroy the righteous with the wicked, and will the righteous be as the impious? 23 And Abraham approached and said, “You wouldn’t destroy the righteous with the wicked, and will the righteous be as the impious?

24 Perhaps there are 50 righteous within the city: will you also destroy and not spare the place for the 50 righteous who are therein?

24 ἐὰν ὦσιν πεντήκοντα δίκαιοι ἐν τῇ πόλει ἀπολεῖς αὐτούς;
οὐκ ἀνήσεις πάντα τὸν τόπον ἕνεκεν τῶν πεντήκοντα δικαίων, ἐὰν ὦσιν ἐν αὐτῇ;
24 ἐὰν ὦσι πεντήκοντα δίκαιοι ἐν τῇ πόλει, ἀπολεῖς αὐτούς;
οὐκ ἀνήσεις πάντα τὸν τόπον ἕνεκεν τῶν πεντήκοντα δικαίων, ἐὰν ὦσιν ἐν αὐτῇ;
24 If there are 50 righteous in the city, will you destroy them? Will you spare all the place for the sake of the 50 righteous, if they are in it? 24 If there are 50 righteous in the city, will you destroy them? Will you spare all the place for the sake of the 50 righteous, if they are in it?

25 That is far from you to do after this manner, to slay the righteous with the wicked; and that the righteous should be as the wicked, that is far from you. Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?”

μηδαμῶς· κρίνων πᾶσαν τὴν γῆν οὐ ποιήσεις κρίσιν;
μηδαμῶς· κρίνων πᾶσαν τὴν γῆν, οὐ ποιήσεις κρίσιν;
25 By no means you shall do such as this thing, to kill righteous with impious, so that righteous will be as the impious. Won’t the one who judges all the land do justice?” 25 By no means you shall do such as this thing, to kill righteous with impious, so that righteous will be as the impious. Won’t the one who judges all the land do justice?”

26 And Yahweh said, “If I find in Sodom 50 righteous within the city, then I will spare all the place for their sakes.”

26 And the Lord said, “If in Sodom, I find 50 righteous in the city, I will spare all the place because of them.” 26 And the Lord said, “If in Sodom, I find 50 righteous in the city, I will spare all the city and all the place because of them.”

27 And Abraham answered and said, “Behold now, I have taken on me to speak to the Lord, who am but dust and ashes.

27 And Abraham answered and said, “Now I have begun to speak to the Lord, and I am dirt and ashes. 27 And Abraham answered and said, “Now I have begun to speak to the Lord, and I am dirt and ashes.

28 Perhaps there shall lack five of the 50 righteous: will you destroy all the city for lack of five?” And he said, “If I find there 45, I won’t destroy it.”

28 ἐὰν δὲ ἐλαττονωθῶσιν οἱ πεντήκοντα δίκαιοι πέντε, ἀπολεῖς ἕνεκεν τῶν πέντε πᾶσαν τὴν πόλιν;
28 ἐὰν δὲ ἐλαττονωθῶσιν οἱ πεντήκοντα δίκαιοι εἰς τεσσαρακονταπέντε, ἀπολεῖς ἕνεκεν τῶν πέντε πᾶσαν τὴν πόλιν;
28 But if the 50 righteous should be diminished by five, will you destroy all the city for the sake of the five?” And he said, “I won’t destroy it, if I should find 45 there.” 28 But if the 50 righteous should be diminished by five, will you destroy all the city for the sake of the five?” And he said, “I won’t destroy it, if I should find 45 there.”

29 And he spoke to him yet again, and said, “Perhaps there shall be 40 found there.” And he said, “I won’t do it for 40’s sake.”

29 καὶ προσέθηκεν ἔτι λαλῆσαι πρὸς αὐτὸν καὶ εἶπεν, ἐὰν δὲ εὑρεθῶσιν ἐκεῖ τεσσαράκοντα;
29 καὶ προσέθηκεν ἔτι λαλῆσαι πρὸς αὐτόν, καὶ εἶπε· ἐὰν δὲ εὑρεθῶσιν ἐκεῖ τεσσαράκοντα;
29 And still he continued to speak to him, and said, “But if 40 are found there?” And he said, “I won’t destroy it for the 40’s sake.” 29 And still he continued to speak to him, and said, “But if 40 are found there?” And he said, “I won’t destroy it for the 40’s sake.”

30 And he said to him, “Oh don’t let the Lord be angry, and I will speak: Perhaps there shall 30 be found there.” And he said, “I won’t do it, if I find 30 there.”

30 καὶ εἶπεν, μή τι, κύριε, ἐὰν λαλήσω· ἐὰν δὲ εὑρεθῶσιν ἐκεῖ τριάκοντα καὶ εἶπεν, οὐ μὴ ἀπολέσω ἐὰν εὕρω ἐκεῖ τριάκοντα. 30 καὶ εἶπε· μή τι κύριε, ἐὰν λαλήσω;
ἐὰν δὲ εὑρεθῶσιν ἐκεῖ τριάκοντα;
30 And he said, “If not, Lord, if I will speak; but if there is 30 there.” And he said, “I won’t destroy if I find 30.” 30 And he said, “If not, Lord, if I will speak; but if there is 30 there.” And he said, “I won’t destroy if I find 30.”

31 And he said, “Behold now, I have taken on me to speak to the Lord: Perhaps there shall be 20 found there.” And he said, “I won’t destroy it for 20’s sake.”

31 καὶ εἶπεν, ἐπειδὴ ἔχω λαλῆσαι πρὸς τὸν κύριον, ἐὰν δὲ εὑρεθῶσιν ἐκεῖ εἴκοσι καὶ εἶπεν, οὐ μὴ ἀπολέσω ἕνεκεν τῶν εἴκοσι. 31 καὶ εἶπε· ἐπειδὴ ἔχω λαλῆσαι πρὸς τὸν κύριον· ἐὰν δὲ εὑρεθῶσιν ἐκεῖ εἴκοσι;
31 And he said, “Then I have to speak to the Lord, if 20 is found there.” And he said, “I won’t destroy it for the sake of 20.” 31 And he said, “Then I have to speak to the Lord, if 20 is found there.” And he said, “I won’t destroy it for the sake of 20.”

32 And he said, “Oh don’t let the Lord be angry, and I will speak yet but this once: Perhaps ten shall be found there.” And he said, “I won’t destroy it for ten’s sake.”

32 καὶ εἶπεν, μή τι, κύριε, ἐὰν λαλήσω ἔτι ἅπαξ ἐὰν δὲ εὑρεθῶσιν ἐκεῖ δέκα;
32 καὶ εἶπε· μήτι κύριε, ἐὰν λαλήσω ἔτι ἅπαξ· ἐὰν δὲ εὑρεθῶσιν ἐκεῖ δέκα;
32 And he said, “If not, Lord, if I will say yet once, but if ten is found there.” And he said, “I won’t destroy for the sake of ten.” 32 And he said, “If not, Lord, if I will say yet once, but if ten is found there.” And he said, “I won’t destroy for the sake of ten.”

33 And Yahweh went his way, as soon as he had left communing with Abraham; and Abraham returned to his place.

33 And the Lord departed when he finished speaking to Abraham, and Abraham returned to his place. 33 And the Lord departed when he finished speaking to Abraham, and Abraham returned to his place.
