AlexandrinusVaticanus

The Doom of Sodom

1 And there came two angels to Sodom at evening; and Lot sat in the gate of Sodom; and Lot seeing them rose up to meet them; and he bowed himself with his face toward the ground;

1 And the two angels went to Sodom at evening. And Lōt sat by the gate of Sodom, and after he saw them, Lōt rose up to meet them, and he worshipped with his face to the ground, 1 And the two angels went to Sodom at evening. And Lōt sat by the gate of Sodom, and after he saw them, Lōt rose up to meet them, and he worshipped with his face to the ground,

2 And he said, “Behold now, my lords, turn in, please, into your servant’s house, and stay all night, and wash your feet, and you shall rise up early, and go on your way.” And they said, “No; but we will abide in the street all night.”

2 and said, “Behold lords, turn aside to the house of your servant, and rest and wash your feet, and after risen early you may depart on your trip.” And they said, “No, but we will lodge in the wide street.” 2 and said, “Behold lords, turn aside to the house of your servant, and rest and wash your feet, and after risen early you may depart on your trip.” And they said, “No, but we will lodge in the wide street.”

3 And he pressed on them greatly; and they turned in to him, and entered into his house; and he made them a feast, and baked unleavened bread, and they ate.

3 And he was constraining them, and they turned away to him, and they entered into his home, and he made a feast for them, and baked unleavened cakes for them, and they ate. 3 And he was constraining them, and they turned away to him, and they entered into his home, and he made a feast for them, and baked unleavened cakes for them, and they ate.

4 But before they lay down, the men of the city, even the men of Sodom, surrounded the house around, both old and young, all the people from every quarter.

4 But before they went to sleep, the men of the city, the Sodomites, surrounded the house, from young to old, all the people together. 4 But before they went to sleep, the men of the city, the Sodomites, surrounded the house, from young to old, all the people together.

5 And they called to Lot, and said to him, “Where are the men who came in to you this night? Bring them out to us, that we may know them.”

5 καὶ ἐξεκαλοῦντο τὸν Λὼτ καὶ ἔλεγον πρὸς αὐτόν, ποῦ εἰσιν οἱ ἄνδρες οἱ εἰσελθόντες πρὸς σὲ τὴν νύκτα;
5 καὶ ἐξεκαλοῦντο τὸν Λὼτ καὶ ἔλεγον πρὸς αὐτόν· ποῦ εἰσιν οἱ ἄνδρες οἱ εἰσελθόντες πρὸς σὲ τὴν νύκτα;
5 And they called out Lot, and said to him, “Where are the men who entered to you tonight? Bring them out to us in order that we may be sexual with them.” 5 And they called out Lot, and said to him, “Where are the men who entered to you tonight? Bring them out to us in order that we may be sexual with them.”

6 And Lot went out at the door to them, and shut the door behind him,

6 And Lot went out to them to the doorway, and he shut the door behind him, 6 And Lot went out to them to the doorway, and he shut the door behind him,

7 And said, “please, brothers, do not so wickedly.

7 and said to them, “Absolutely not, brothers, don’t act wickedly. 7 and said to them, “Absolutely not, brothers, don’t act wickedly.

8 Behold now, I have two daughters who haven’t known man; let me, please, bring them out to you, and do to them as is good in your eyes: only to these men do nothing; for therefore came they under the shadow of my roof.”

8 But I have two daughters, who haven’t known a man. I will bring them out to you, and use them as it may please you, only don’t do anything wrong to these men, that’s why they came under the protection of my house-beams.” 8 But I have two daughters, who haven’t known a man. I will bring them out to you, and use them as it may please you, only don’t do anything wrong to these men, that’s why they came under the protection of my house-beams.”

9 And they said, “Stand back.” And they said again, “This fellow came in to stay, and he wants to be a judge: now will we deal worse with you, than with them.” And they pressed hard on the man, even Lot, and came near to break the door.

εἷς ἦλθες παροικεῖν· μὴ καὶ κρίσιν;
εἰσῆλθες παροικεῖν· μὴ καὶ κρίσιν κρίνειν;
9 And they said to him, “Move away there! Didn’t you come in to dwell as a resident alien, and not be a judge? Now to judge, therefore, we will hurt you more than them.” And they were acting very violently to the man, Lot, and they were about to shatter the door. 9 And they said to him, “Move away there! Didn’t you come in to dwell as a resident alien, and not be a judge? Now to judge, therefore, we will hurt you more than them.” And they were acting very violently to the man, Lot, and they were about to shatter the door.

10 But the men put forth their hand, and pulled Lot into the house to them, and shut the door.

10 And the men stretched out their hands and pulled Lot in to them into the house, and shut the door of the house. 10 And the men stretched out their hands and pulled Lot in to them into the house, and shut the door of the house.

11 And they smote the men who were at the door of the house with blindness, both small and great; so that they wearied themselves to find the door.

11 And they struck with blindness the men who were at the door of the house, from the smallest to the biggest, and they were exhausted searching for the door. 11 And they struck with blindness the men who were at the door of the house, from the smallest to the biggest, and they were exhausted searching for the door.

12 And the men said to Lot, “Have you here any besides? Son-in-law, and your sons, and your daughters, and whoever you have in the city, bring them out of this place.

12 εἶπαν δὲ οἱ ἄνδρες πρὸς Λώτ, ἔστιν τίς σοί ὧδε, γαμβροὶ υἱοὶ θυγατέρες;
12 Εἶπαν δὲ οἱ ἄνδρες πρὸς Λώτ· εἰσί σοι ὧδε γαμβροὶ υἱοὶ θυγατέρες;
12 And the men said to Lot, “Is there anyone with you here–son-in-law or sons or daughters? Or if anyone else of yours is in the city, bring them out of this place.” 12 And the men said to Lot, “Is there with you here–son-in-law or sons or daughters? Or if anyone else of yours is in the city, bring them out of this place.”

13 For we will destroy this place, because the cry of them is grown great before the face of Yahweh; and Yahweh has sent us to destroy it.”

13 Because we are destroying this place; for their cry has been raised up before the Lord, and the Lord has sent us to destroy it. 13 Because we are destroying this place; for their cry has been raised up before the Lord, and the Lord has sent us to destroy it.

14 And Lot went out, and spoke to his sons-in-law, who married his daughters, and said, “Up, get you out of this place; for Yahweh will destroy this city.” But he seemed as one who mocked to his sons-in-law.

14 And Lot went out, and spoke to his sons-in-law who took his daughters, and said, “Get up, and get out of this place, for the Lord is about to wipe out the city. But in the opinion of his sons-in-law, he seemed to be joking.” 14 And Lot went out, and spoke to his sons-in-law who took his daughters, and said, “Get up, and get out of this place, for the Lord is about to wipe out the city. But in the opinion of his sons-in-law, he seemed to be joking.”

15 And when the morning arose, then the angels hurried Lot, saying, “Arise, take your wife, and your two daughters, who are here; lest you be consumed in the iniquity of the city.”

15 But when it was dawn, the angels hurried Lot, saying, “Get up, take your wife, and your two daughters whom you have, and go out; lest you perish together with the lawlessnesses of the city.” 15 But when it was dawn, the angels hurried Lot, saying, “Get up, take your wife, and your two daughters whom you have, and go out; lest you perish together with the lawlessnesses of the city.”

16 And while he lingered, the men laid hold on his hand, and on the hand of his wife, and on the hand of his two daughters; Yahweh being merciful to him; and they brought him forth, and set him outside the city.

16 And they were confused, and the angels seized his hand, and the hand of his wife, and the hands of his two daughters, in the way the Lord spared him. 16 And they were confused, and the angels seized his hand, and the hand of his wife, and the hands of his two daughters, in the way the Lord spared him.

17 And it happened, when they had brought them forth abroad, that he said, “Escape for your life; don’t look behind you, neither stay in all the plain; escape to the mountain, lest you be consumed.”

17 And it happened when they brought them outside, that they said, “While saving, save your own life; don’t look around to what is behind, nor stay in all the surrounding country, escape into the mountain, lest you are included.” 17 And it happened when they brought them outside, that they said, “While saving, save your own life; don’t look around to what is behind, nor stay in all the surrounding country, escape into the mountain, lest you are included.”

18 And Lot said to them, “Oh, not so, my Lord.

18 And Lot said to them, “Please, Lord, 18 And Lot said to them, “Please, Lord,

19 Behold now, your servant has found grace in your sight, and you have magnified your mercy, which you have showed to me in saving my life; and I cannot escape to the mountain, lest some evil take me, and I die.

19 since your servant has found mercy before you, and you have magnified your righteousness, what you have done concerning me, I don’t have strength to escape into the mountain, the disaster might overcome me and I might die. 19 since your servant has found mercy before you, and you have magnified your righteousness, what you have done concerning me, I don’t have strength to escape into the mountain, the disaster might overcome me and I might die.

20 Behold now, this city is near to flee unto, and it is a little one: Oh, let me escape to that place, (isn’t it a little one?) and my soul shall live.”

20 ἰδοὺ πόλις αὕτη ἐγγὺς τοῦ καταφυγεῖν με ἐκεῖ, ἐστιν μικρά, ἐκεῖ σωθήσομαι· οὐ μικρά ἐστιν;
20 ἰδοὺ πόλις αὕτη ἐγγὺς τοῦ καταφυγεῖν με ἐκεῖ, ἔστι μικρά, καὶ ἐκεῖ διασωθήσομαι· οὐ μικρά ἔστι;
20 Behold this city is near for me to escape there, which is a small one, and I will be preserved there, isn’t it little? And my soul will live.” 20 Behold this city is near for me to escape there, which is a small one, and I will be preserved there, isn’t it little? And my soul will live because of you.”

21 And he said to him, “See, I have accepted you concerning this thing also, that I won’t overthrow this city, for which you have spoken.

21 And he said to him, “Look! I complied to your face and to this word that I shouldn’t overthrow the city concerning which you have spoken. 21 And he said to him, “Look! I complied to your face and to this word that I shouldn’t overthrow the city concerning which you have spoken.

22 Hurry, escape to that place; for I cannot do anything till you be come to that place.” Therefore the name of the city was called Zoar.

22 Hurry therefore to escape there, for I will not be able to do anything until you are come there.” Therefore he called the name of that city, Sēgōr. 22 Hurry therefore to escape there, for I will not be able to do anything until you are come there.” Therefore he called the name of that city, Sēgōr.

23 The sun was risen on the earth when Lot entered into Zoar.

23 The sun rose on the earth, when Lot entered into Sēgōr. 23 The sun rose on the earth, when Lot entered into Sēgōr.

24 Then Yahweh rained on Sodom and on Gomorrah brimstone and fire from Yahweh out of heaven;

24 And the Lord rained sulfur on Sodom and Gomorra, also fire from the Lord out of the sky. 24 And the Lord rained sulfur on Sodom and Gomorra, also fire from the Lord out of the sky.

25 And he overthrew those cities, and all the plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and what grew on the ground.

25 And he destroyed these cities, and all the surrounding, and all the inhabitants in the cities, and that springs out of the ground. 25 And he destroyed these cities, and all the surrounding, and all the inhabitants in the cities, and that springs out of the ground.

26 But his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt.

26 And his wife looked back, and she became a pillar of salt. 26 And his wife looked back, and she became a pillar of salt.

27 And Abraham got up early in the morning to the place where he stood before Yahweh.

27 And Abraham rose up early in the morning to go to the place, where he had stood before the Lord. 27 And Abraham rose up early in the morning to go to the place, where he had stood before the Lord.

28 And he looked toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and toward all the land of the plain, and beheld, and, lo, the smoke of the country went up as the smoke of a furnace.

28 And he looked on the surface of Sodom and Gomorra, and on the surface of the surrounding land, and saw, and look! a flame went up from the land, as smoke of an oven. 28 And he looked on the surface of Sodom and Gomorra, and on the surface of the surrounding, and saw, and look! a flame went up from the land, as smoke of an oven.

29 And it happened, when God destroyed the cities of the plain, that God remembered Abraham, and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow, when he overthrew the cities in which Lot dwelt.

29 And it happened after the Lord destroyed all the surrounding cities, God remembered Abraham, and sent Lot out of the middle of the destruction, when the Lord destroyed those cities in which Lot dwelt. 29 And it happened after the Lord destroyed all the surrounding cities, God remembered Abraham, and sent Lot out of the middle of the destruction, when the Lord destroyed those cities in which Lot dwelt.

Lot and Daughters

30 And Lot went up out of Zoar, and dwelt in the mountain, and his two daughters with him; for he feared to dwell in Zoar; and he dwelt in a cave, he and his two daughters.

30 And Lot went up out of Sēgōr, and dwelt in the mountain and his two daughters with him, for he feared to dwell in Sēgōr; and he dwelt in a cave, he and his two daughters with him. 30 And Lot went up out of Sēgōr, and dwelt in the mountain, he and his two daughters with him, for he feared to dwell in Sēgōr; and he dwelt in a cave, he and his two daughters with him.

31 And the firstborn said to the younger, “Our father is old, and there isn’t a man in the earth to come in to us after the manner of all the earth.

31 And the elder said to the younger, “Our father is old, and there is no one on the land who will come in to us, as is proper in all the land. 31 And the elder said to the younger, “Our father is old, and there is no one on the land who will come in to us, as is proper in all the land.

32 Come, let us make our father drink wine, and we will lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father.”

32 Come and let’s make our father drink wine, and let’s sleep with him, and let’s raise up offspring from our father.” 32 Come and let’s make our father drink wine, and let’s sleep with him, and let’s raise up offspring from our father.”

33 And they made their father drink wine that night; and the firstborn went in, and lay with her father; and he didn’t perceive when she lay down, nor when she arose.

33 They made their father drink wine on that night, and the elder went in and lay with her father that night, and he didn’t know when he slept and when he rose up. 33 They made their father drink wine on that night, and the elder went in and lay with her father that night, and he didn’t know when he slept and when he rose up.

34 And it happened on the next day, that the firstborn said to the younger, “Behold, I lay last night with my father: let us make him drink wine this night also; and you go in, and lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our Father.”

34 And it happened on the next day, that the elder said to the younger, “Look! I slept with our father yesterday, let’s make him drink wine in this night also, and you go in and sleep with him, and let’s raise up offspring of our father.” 34 And it happened on the next day, that the elder said to the younger, “Look! I slept with our father yesterday, let’s make him drink wine in this night also, and you go in and sleep with him, and let’s raise up offspring of our father.”

35 And they made their father drink wine that night also; and the younger arose, and lay with him; and he didn’t perceive when she lay down, nor when she arose.

35 So they made their father drink wine on that night also, and the younger went in and slept with her father, and he didn’t know when he slept, nor when he arose. 35 So they made their father drink wine on that night also, and the younger went in and slept with her father, and he didn’t know when he slept, nor when he arose.
