Jacōb’s Fear of Esau

1 And Jacōb went on his way, and the angels of God met him.

1 And Jacōb departed on his own way. And looking up he saw an encamped camp of God, and the angels of God met with him. 1 And Jacōb departed on his own way. And looking up he saw an encamped camp of God, and the angels of God met with him.

2 And when Jacōb saw them, he said, “This is God’s army”; and he called the name of that place Mahanaim.

2 Now when he saw them, Jacōb said, “This is a camp of God!” And he called the name of that place Camps. 2 Now when he saw them, Jacōb said, “This is a camp of God!” And he called the name of that place Camps.

3 And Jacōb sent messengers before him to Esau his brother to the land of Seir, the country of Edom.

3 And Jacōb sent messengers ahead of him to his brother Hēsau in Sēir-land in the country of Edōm, 3 And Jacōb sent messengers ahead of him to his brother Hēsau in Sēir-land in the country of Edōm,

4 And he commanded them, saying, “Thus you shall speak to my lord Esau; ‘Your servant Jacōb says thus, “I have stayed with Laban, and stayed there until now.

4 and he commanded them, saying, “Thus you shall say to my lord Hēsau. Thus says your servant Jacōb, ‛I have lived as a resident alien with Laban and stayed until now, 4 and he commanded them, saying, “Thus you shall say to my lord Hēsau. Thus says your servant Jacōb, ‛I have lived as a resident alien with Laban and stayed until now,

5 And I have oxen, and donkeys, flocks, and menservants, and womenservants; and I have sent to tell my lord, that I may find grace in your sight.”’ ”

5 and there came to me cattle and donkeys and sheep and male and female servants, and I have sent to tell my lord Hēsau in order that your servant may find favour before you.’ ” 5 and there came to me cattle and donkeys and sheep and male and female servants, and I have sent to tell my lord Hēsau in order that your servant may find favour before you.’ ”

6 And the messengers returned to Jacōb, saying, “We came to your brother Esau, and also he comes to meet you, and 400 men with him.”

6 And the messengers returned to Jacōb, saying, “We went to your brother Hēsau, and Look! he is coming to meet with you, and 400 men are with him.” 6 And the messengers returned to Jacōb, saying, “We went to your brother Hēsau, and Look! he is coming to meet with you, and 400 men are with him.”

7 Then Jacōb was greatly afraid and distressed; and he divided the people that was with him, and the flocks, and herds, and the camels, into two bands;

7 Then Jacōb was very afraid and perplexed. And he divided the people who were with him and the herd of cattle and the sheep into two companies, 7 Then Jacōb was very afraid and perplexed. And he divided the people who were with him and the herd of cattle and the sheep into two companies,

8 And said, “If Esau come to the one company, and smite it, then the other company which is left shall escape.”

8 and Jacōb said, “If Hēsau should come to one company and cut it out, then the second company will be in safety.” 8 and Jacōb said, “If Hēsau should come to one company and cut it out, then the second company will be in safety.”

9 And Jacōb said,” Oh God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, Yahweh who said to me, ‘Return to your country, and to your kindred, and I will deal well with you’.

9 And Jacōb said, “God of my father Abraham and God of my father Isaac, O Lord who said to me, ‛Run away to the country of your origin, and I will do you good,’ 9 And Jacōb said, “God of my father Abraham and God of my father Isaac, O Lord who said to me, ‛Run away to the country of your origin, and I will do you good,’

10 I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies, and of all the truth, which you have shown to your servant; for with my staff I passed over this Jordan; and now I am become two bands.

10 It is enough for me from all righteousness and from all truth that you have done for your servant. For with my staff I crossed this Jordan, but now I have become two companies. 10 It is enough for me from all righteousness and from all truth that you have done for your servant. For with my staff I crossed this Jordan, but now I have become two companies.

11 Deliver me, please, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau; for I fear him, lest he will come and smite me, and the mother with the children.

11 Deliver me from the hand of my brother Hēsau (because I am afraid of him) in order that when he comes, he will not strike me and mother with children. 11 Deliver me from the hand of my brother Hēsau (because I am afraid of him) in order that when he comes, he will not strike me and mother with children.

12 And you said, ‘I will surely do you good, and make your seed as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude.’ ”

12 But you said, ‛I will do you beneficially good and make your offspring as the sand of the sea, which shall not be counted for multitude.’ ” 12 But you said, ‛I will do you beneficially good and make your offspring as the sand of the sea, which shall not be counted for multitude.’ ”

13 And he lodged there that same night; and took of what came to his hand a present for Esau his brother;

13 And he slept there that night. And from what he was bringing, he took gifts and sent them out to his brother Hēsau, 13 And he slept there that night. And from what he was bringing, he took gifts and sent them out to his brother Hēsau,

14 200 she goats, and 20 male goats, 200 ewes, and 20 rams,

14 200 female-goats, 20 male goats, 200 sheep, 20 rams, 14 200 female-goats, 20 male goats, 200 sheep, 20 rams,

15 Thirty milk camels with their colts, 40 kine, and ten bulls, 20 she donkeys, and ten foals.

15 30 milk camels, and their young, 40 cows, 10 bulls, 20 donkeys, and 10 colts. 15 30 milk camels, and their young, 40 cows, 10 bulls, 20 donkeys, and 10 colts.

16 And he delivered them into the hand of his servants, every drove by itself; and said to his servants, “Pass over before me, and put a space between drove and drove.”

16 And he gave them by the hand of his servant, a flock for each one. And he said to his servants, “Go on ahead of me, and put a space between herd and herd.” 16 And he gave them by the hand of his servant, a flock for each one. And he said to his servants, “Go on ahead of me, and put a space between herd and herd.”

17 And he commanded the foremost, saying, “When Esau my brother meets you, and asks you, saying, ‘Whose are you? And to which go you? And whose are these before you?’

17 καὶ ἐνετείλατο τῷ πρώτῳ λέγων, ἐάν σοί συναντήσῃ Ἡσαῦ ἀδελφός μου καὶ ἐρωτᾷ σὲ λέγων, τίνος εἶ καὶ ποῦ πορεύῃ, καὶ τίνος ταῦτα τὰ προπορευόμενά σου; 17 καὶ ἐνετείλατο τῷ πρώτῳ, λέγων· ἐάν σοι συναντήσῃ Ἡσαῦ ἀδελφός μου καὶ ἐρωτᾷ σε, λέγων· τίνος εἶ καὶ ποῦ πορεύῃ, καὶ τίνος ταῦτα τὰ προπορευόμενά σου;
17 And he commanded the first, saying, “If Hēsau my brother should meet you and ask you, saying, ‛Whose are you and where are you going, and whose are these going on ahead of you?’ 17 And he commanded the first, saying, “If Hēsau my brother should meet you and ask you, saying, ‛Whose are you and where are you going, and whose are these going on ahead of you?’

18 Then you shall say, ‘They be your servant Jacōb’s; it is a present sent to my lord Esau: and, behold, also he is behind us.’ ”

18 you shall say, ‛Your servant Jakōb’s; he has sent gifts to my lord Hēsau, and look, there he is behind us.’ ” 18 you shall say, ‛Your servant Jakōb’s; he has sent gifts to my lord Hēsau, and look, there he is behind us.’ ”

19 And so commanded he the second, and the third, and all that followed the droves, saying, “On this manner you shall speak to Esau, when you find him.

19 And he commanded the first and the second and the third and all who were going on behind these flocks, saying, “According to this word, speak to Hēsau when you find him. 19 And he commanded the first and the second and the third and all who were going on behind these flocks, saying, “According to this word, speak to Hēsau when you find him.

20 And say moreover, ‘Behold, your servant Jacōb is behind us.’ ” For he said, “I will appease him with the present that goes before me, and afterward I will see his face; perhaps he will accept me.”

20 And you shall say, ‛Look! your servant Jacōb is coming behind us.’’ ” For he said, “I shall appease his face with the gifts that go on before him, and afterwards I shall see his face, for perhaps he will accept my face.” 20 And you shall say, ‛Look! your servant Jacōb is coming behind us.’’ For he said, “I shall appease his face with the gifts that go on before him, and afterwards I shall see his face, for perhaps he will accept my face.”

21 So went the present over before him; and he himself lodged that night in the company.

21 And the gifts passed by in front of him, but he himself slept that night in the camp. 21 And the gifts passed by in front of him, but he himself slept that night in the camp.

22 And he rose up that night, and took his two wives, and his two womenservants, and his eleven sons, and passed over the ford Jabbok.

22 And that night, after he got up, he took his two wives and his two female servants and his eleven children and crossed the ford of the Jabok. 22 And that night, after he got up, he took his two wives and his two female servants and his eleven children and crossed the ford of the Jabok.

23 And he took them, and sent them over the brook, and sent over what he had.

23 And he took them and crossed the stream and carried over all his things. 23 And he took them and crossed the stream and carried over all his things.

Jacōb Wrestles

24 And Jacōb was left alone; and there wrestled a man with him until the breaking of the day.

24 And Jacōb was left alone, and a man wrestled with him until morning. 24 And Jacōb was left alone, and a man wrestled with him until morning.

25 And when he saw that he prevailed not against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacōb’s thigh was out of joint, as he wrestled with him.

25 And he saw that he was not powerful against him, and he touched the flat part of his thigh, and the flat part of Jakōb’s thigh was paralyzed as he wrestled with him. 25 And he saw that he was not powerful against him, and he touched the flat part of his thigh, and the flat part of Jakōb’s thigh was paralyzed as he wrestled with him.

26 And he said, “Let me go, for the day breaks.” And he said, “I won’t let you go, except you bless me.”

26 And he said to him, “Send me away, for the dawn has come up.” But he said, “I won’t send you away, unless you bless me.” 26 And he said to him, “Send me away, for the dawn has come up.” But he said, “I won’t send you away, unless you bless me.”

27 And he said to him, “What is your name?” And he said, “Jacōb.”

27 εἶπεν δὲ αὐτῷ, τί τὸ ὄνομά σου ἐστιν;
27 And he said to him, “What is your name?” and he answered, “Jacōb.” 27 And he said to him, “What is your name?” and he answered, “Jacōb.”

28 And he said, “Your name shall be called no more Jacōb, but Israēl; for as a prince have you power with God and with men, and have prevailed.”

28 And he said to him, “Your name shall no longer be called Jacōb, but your name shall be Israēl, because you have prevailed with God, and [shall be] strong with men.” 28 And he said to him, “Your name shall no longer be called Jacōb, but your name shall be Israēl, because you have prevailed with God, and [shall be] strong with men.”

29 And Jacōb asked him, and said, “Tell me, please, your name.” And he said, “Why do you ask for my name?” And he blessed him there.

καὶ εἶπεν, ἵνα τί τοῦτο ἐρωτᾷς τὸ ὄνομά μου;
καὶ εἶπε· ἱνατί τοῦτο ἐρωτᾷς σὺ τὸ ὄνομά μου;
29 Then Jacōb asked and said, “Tell me your name.” And he said, “Why do you ask this, my name?” And he blessed him there. 29 Then Jacōb asked and said, “Tell me your name.” And he said, “Why do you ask this, my name?” And he blessed him there.

30 And Jacōb called the name of the place Peniel; “for I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.”

30 And Jacōb called the name of that place Appearance-of-God, “for I saw God face to face, and my soul was preserved.” 30 And Jacōb called the name of that place Appearance-of-God, “for I saw God face to face, and my soul was preserved.”

31 And as he passed over Penuel the sun rose on him, and he halted on his thigh.

31 And the sun rose on him when he passed by Appearance-of-God; but he was limping on his thigh. 31 And the sun rose on him when he passed by Appearance-of-God; but he was limping on his thigh.

32 Therefore the sons of Israēl eat not of the sinew which shrank, which is on the hollow of the thigh, to this day: because he touched the hollow of Jacōb’s thigh in the sinew that shrank.

32 Therefore to this day, the sons of Israēl will not eat the sinew that was paralyzed, that is on the flat part of the thigh, because he touched the flat part of Jakōb’s thigh, the sinew, and it became paralyzed. 32 Therefore to this day, the sons of Israēl will not eat the sinew that was paralyzed, that is on the flat part of the thigh, because he touched the flat part of Jakōb’s thigh, the sinew, and it became paralyzed.
