Chapter 21
The New Heaven and the New Earth
1Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea is no longer. 2And I saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God, prepared like a bride adorned for her husband. 3And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with humanity, and He will dwell with them, and they will be His peoples, and God Himself will be with them as their God. 4And He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death will be no longer; neither grief nor crying nor pain will be any longer, because the former things have passed away.”
The Proclamation from the Throne
5And the One sitting upon the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” And He says, “Write, for these words are faithful and true.” 6And He said to me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To the one who thirsts, I will give from the spring of the water of life as a gift. 7The one who conquers will inherit these things, and I will be God to him and he will be a son to Me. 8But as for the cowardly, and faithless, and detestable, and murderers, and the sexually immoral, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars—their portion is in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death.”
The Invitation to See the Bride
The Measurement and Structure of the City
10And he carried me away in the Spirit to a great and high mountain, and he showed me the holy city, Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God, 11possessing the glory of God. Its radiance was like a most precious stone, like a crystal-clear jasper stone. 12It had a great and high wall; it had twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels, and names inscribed upon them, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the sons of Israel. 13On the east were three gates, and on the north three gates, and on the south three gates, and on the west three gates. 14And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and upon them were the twelve names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.
15And the one speaking with me had a gold measuring rod to measure the city, and its gates, and its wall. 16The city lies as a square, its length being the same as its width. And he measured the city with the rod at twelve thousand stadia; its length and width and height are equal. 17He also measured its wall: one hundred and forty-four cubits, by a human measurement, which is also an angel’s.
The Splendor of the Materials
18The material of its wall was jasper, and the city was pure gold, like clear glass. 19The foundations of the wall of the city were adorned with every kind of precious stone: the first foundation was jasper, the second sapphire, the third chalcedony, the fourth emerald, 20the fifth sardonyx, the sixth carnelian, the seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth chrysoprase, the eleventh hyacinth, the twelfth amethyst. 21And the twelve gates were twelve pearls; each one of the gates was made from a single pearl. And the main street of the city was pure gold, like transparent glass.
The Temple and the Light of the City
22And I saw no temple in it, for the Lord God the Almighty is its temple, and the Lamb. 23And the city has no need of the sun or the moon to shine upon it, for the glory of God illuminated it, and its lamp is the Lamb. 24The nations will walk by its light, and the kings of the earth bring their glory into it. 25Its gates will never be closed by day—for there will be no night there— 26and they will bring the glory and the honor of the nations into it. 27But nothing unclean, nor anyone who practices abomination and lying, shall ever enter it, but only those written in the Lamb’s Book of Life.
