War against Jerusalem

1 And it happened in the days of Ahaz the son of Jotham, the son of Uzziah, king of Judah, that Rezin the king of Syria, and Pekah the son of Remaliah, king of Israēl, went up toward Jerusalem to war against it, but couldn’t prevail against it.

1 And it happened in the days of Achaz son of Jōatham the son of Ozias, king of Jouda, that King Raassōn of Aram and King Phakee son of Romelias of Israēl went up against Jerousalēm to wage war against it but couldn’t besiege it. 1 And it happened in the days of Achaz son of Jōatham the son of Ozias, king of Jouda, that King Raseim of Aram and King Phakee son of Romelias of Israēl went up against Jerousalēm to wage war against it but couldn’t besiege it.

2 And it was told the house of David, saying, Syria is confederate with Ephraim. And his heart was moved, and the heart of his people, as the trees of the wood are moved with the wind.

2 And it was reported to the house of David, saying, “Aram has made an agreement with Ephraim.” And his soul and the soul of his people were startled in the manner when a tree in the forest is shaken by the wind.
2 And it was reported to the house of David, saying, “Aram has made an agreement with Ephraim.” And his soul and the soul of his people were startled in the manner when a tree in the forest is shaken by the wind.

3 Then said Yahweh to Isaiah, Go forth now to meet Ahaz, you, and Shear-jashub your son, at the end of the conduit of the upper pool in the highway of the fuller’s field;

3 Then the Lord said to Ēsaias, Go out to meet Achaz, you and the one who is left, your son Jasoub, at the pool on the upper road to Fuller’s Field.
3 Then the Lord said to Ēsaias, Go out to meet Achaz, you and the one who is left, your son Jasoub, at the pool on the upper road to Fuller’s Field.

4 And say to him, Take heed, and be quiet; don’t fear, neither be fainthearted for the two tails of these smoking firebrands, for the fierce anger of Rezin with Syria, and of the son of Remaliah.

4 And you will say to him, Take care to be quiet, and don’t fear, don’t let your soul be feeble because of these two logs of smoking firebrands, for when my anger of wrath comes to be, I will heal again. 4 And you will say to him, Take care to be quiet, and don’t fear, don’t let your soul be feeble because of these two logs of smoking firebrands, for when my anger of wrath comes to be, I will heal again.

5 Because Syria, Ephraim, and the son of Remaliah, have taken evil counsel against you, saying,

5 And as for the son of Aram and the son of Romelias: Because they have advised evil advice concerning you, saying, 5 And as for the son of Aram and the son of Romelias: Because they have advised evil advice concerning you, saying,

6 Let’s go up against Judah, and vex it, and let’s make a breach in it for us, and set a king in the midst of it, even the son of Tabeal.

6 We will go up to Judea, and after talking with them, let us turn them toward us, and we will make the son of Tabeēl king over it; 6 We will go up to Judea, and after talking with them, let us turn them toward us, and we will make the son of Tabeēl king over it;

7 Thus says Adonai Yahweh, It shall not stand, neither shall it come to pass.

7 this is what the Lord Sabaōth says. This counsel shall not remain, nor shall it be. 7 this is what the Lord Sabaōth says. This counsel shall not remain, nor shall it be.

8 For the head of Syria is Damascus, and the head of Damascus is Rezin; and within 65 years shall Ephraim be broken, that it isn’t a people.

8 But the head of Aram is Damascus, but yet within sixty-five years the kingdom of Ephraim will cease from being a people. 8 But the head of Aram is Damascus, but yet within sixty-five years the kingdom of Ephraim will cease from being a people.

9 And the head of Ephraim is Samaria, and the head of Samaria is Remaliah’s son. If you won’t believe, surely you shall not be established.

9 And the head of Ephraim is Somorōn, and the head of Somorōn is the son of Romelias. And if you don’t believe, neither shall you understand. 9 And the head of Ephraim is Somorōn, and the head of Somorōn is the son of Romelias. And if you don’t believe, neither shall you understand.

The Child Immanuel

10 Moreover Yahweh spoke again to Ahaz, saying,

10 And the Lord spoke further to Achaz, saying, 10 And the Lord spoke further to Achaz, saying,

11 Ask a sign of Yahweh your Elohim; ask it either in the depth, or in the height above.

11 Ask a sign of the Lord your God for yourself, in depth or in height. 11 Ask a sign of the Lord your God for yourself, in depth or in height.

12 But Ahaz said, I won’t ask, neither will I tempt Yahweh.

12 But Achaz said, I will not ask, nor will I test the Lord. 12 But Achaz said, I will not ask, nor will I test the Lord.

13 And he said, Hear now, Oh house of David; Is it a small thing for you to weary men, but will you weary my God also?

13 καὶ εἶπεν ἀκούσατε δή, οἶκος Δαυίδ· μὴ μικρὸν ὑμῖν ἀγῶνα παρέχειν ἀνθρώποις;
καὶ πῶς κυρίῳ παρέχετε ἀγῶνα;
13 καὶ εἶπε· ἀκούσατε δή, οἶκος Δαυίδ· μὴ μικρὸν ὑμῖν ἀγῶνα παρέχειν ἀνθρώποις;
καὶ πῶς Κυρίῳ παρέχετε ἀγῶνα;
13 Then he said. “Please hear, Oh house of David! Is it a small thing for you to provoke a fight with mortals? How then do you provoke a fight with the Lord? 13 Then he said. “Please hear, Oh house of David! Is it a small thing for you to provoke a fight with mortals? How then do you provoke a fight with the Lord?

14 Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

14 Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Look, the virgin shall be with child and give birth to a son, and you shall name him Emmanouēl. 14 Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Look, the virgin shall be with child and give birth to a son, and you shall name him Emmanouēl.

15 Butter and honey he shall eat, that he may know to refuse the evil, and choose the good.

15 He shall eat butter and honey; before he knows or prefers evil things, he shall choose what is good. 15 He shall eat butter and honey; before he knows or prefers evil things, he shall choose what is good.

16 For before the child shall know to refuse the evil, and choose the good, the land that you abhor shall be forsaken of both her kings.

16 For before the child knows good or bad, he refuses evil to choose what is good, and the land that you fear from the presence of the two kings will be abandoned. 16 For before the child knows good or bad, he refuses evil to choose what is good, and the land that you fear from the presence of the two kings will be abandoned.

Trials to Come for Judah

17 Yahweh shall bring on you, and on your people, and on your father’s house, days that haven’t come, from the day that Ephraim departed from Judah; even the king of Assyria.

17 But God will bring on you and on your people and on your paternal house such days as have not yet come since the day that he took Ephraim away from Jouda, the king of the Assyrians.” 17 But God will bring on you and on your people and on your paternal house such days as have not yet come since the day that he took Ephraim away from Jouda, the king of the Assyrians.”

18 And it will happen in that day, that Yahweh shall hiss for the fly that is in the uttermost part of the rivers of Egypt, and for the bee that is in the land of Assyria.

18 And it shall be on that day that the Lord will whistle for the flies that rule part of the river of Egypt and for the bee that is in the country of the Assyrians. 18 And it shall be on that day that the Lord will whistle for the flies that rule part of the river of Egypt and for the bee that is in the country of the Assyrians.

19 And they shall come, and shall rest all of them in the desolate valleys, and in the holes of the rocks, and on all thorns, and on all bushes.

19

19 And they will all come and rest in the ravines of the country and in the clefts of the rocks and into the caves and into every crevice and on every tree. 19 And they will all come and rest in the ravines of the country and in the clefts of the rocks and into the caves and into every crevice and on every tree.

20 In the same day shall the Lord shave with a razor that is hired, namely, by them beyond the river, by the king of Assyria, the head, and the hair of the feet; and it shall also consume the beard.

20 On that day the Lord will shave with the great and drunken razor (which is beyond the river of the king of the Assyrians) the head and the hair of the feet, and he will cut off the beard. 20 On that day the Lord will shave with the great and drunken razor (which is beyond the river of the king of the Assyrians) the head and the hair of the feet, and he will cut off the beard.

21 And it will happen in that day, that a man shall nourish a young cow, and two sheep;

21 And on that day, it shall be that a man will nourish a heifer of the cattle herd and two sheep, 21 And on that day, it shall be that a man will nourish a heifer of the cattle herd and two sheep,

22 And it will happen, for the abundance of milk that they shall give he shall eat butter; for butter and honey shall everyone eat that is left in the land.

22 and it shall be, because of the abundance of milk that they give, that everyone left on the land will eat butter and honey. 22 and it shall be, because of the abundance of milk that they give, that everyone left on the land will eat butter and honey.

23 And it will happen in that day, that every place shall be, where there were 1000 vines at 1000 silverlings, it shall even be for briers and thorns.

23 And it shall be on that day that every place where there used to be a thousand vines, worth a thousand shekels, will become barren ground and thorn. 23 And it shall be on that day that every place where there used to be a thousand vines, worth a thousand shekels, will become barren ground and thorn.

24 With arrows and with bows shall men come to that place; because all the land shall become briers and thorns.

24 With dart and arrow they will enter there, for all the land will be barren ground and thorn, 24 With dart and arrow they will enter there, for all the land will be barren ground and thorn,

25 And on all hills that shall be dug with the mattock, there shall not come to that place the fear of briers and thorns; but it shall be for the sending forth of oxen, and for the treading of lesser cattle.

25 and every mountain being plowed will be plowed, and fear will not come there, for it will be turned from the barren ground and thorn to a place where a sheep can feed and an ox can tread. 25 and every mountain being plowed will be plowed, and fear will not come there, for it will be turned from the barren ground and thorn to a place where a sheep can feed and an ox can tread.
