Damascus and Samaria Fall

1 Moreover Yahweh said to me, Take a great roll, and write in it with a man’s pen concerning Maher-shalal-hash-baz.

1 Then the Lord said to me, Get yourself a new large scroll and write on it with a man’s pen “about the quickly taking of plunder from the spoils, for it is near.” 1 Then the Lord said to me, Get yourself a new large scroll and write on it with a man’s pen “about the quickly taking of plunder from the spoils, for it is near.”

2 And I took to me faithful witnesses to record, Uriah the priest, and Zechariah the son of Jeberechiah.

2 and make faithful men my witnesses, Ourias and Zacharias son of Barachias. 2 and make faithful men my witnesses, Ourias and Zacharias son of Barachias.

3 And I went to the prophetess; and she conceived, and gave birth to a son. Then said Yahweh to me, Call his name Maher-shalal-hash-baz.

3 And I went to the prophetess, and she conceived and bore a son. Then the Lord said to me, Name him: Spoil Soon, Plunder Swiftly. 3 And I went to the prophetess, and she conceived and bore a son. Then the Lord said to me, Name him: Spoil Soon, Plunder Swiftly.

4 For before the child shall have knowledge to cry, My father, and my mother, the riches of Damascus and the spoil of Samaria shall be taken away before the king of Assyria.

4 for before the child knows how to call father or mother, the power of Damascus and the spoils of Samaria will be taken before the king of the Assyrians. 4 for before the child knows how to call father or mother, the power of Damascus and the spoils of Samaria will be taken before the king of the Assyrians.

5 Yahweh spoke also to me again, saying,

5 And again the Lord spoke to me, still saying, 5 And again the Lord spoke to me, still saying,

6 Forasmuch as this people refuses the waters of Shiloah that go softly, and rejoice in Rezin and Remaliah’s son;

6 Because this people doesn’t want the water of Silōam that proceeds gently but wants to have Raassōn and the son of Romelias as king over you, 6 Because this people doesn’t want the water of Silōam that proceeds gently but wants to have Raseim and the son of Romelias as king over you,

7 Now therefore, behold, the Lord brings up on them the waters of the river, strong and many, even the king of Assyria, and all his glory; and he shall come up over all his channels, and go over all his banks.

7 therefore look, the Lord is bringing up against you the strong and abundant water of the river, the king of the Assyrians and his glory, and he will go up on every valley of yours and walk on every wall of yours, 7 therefore look, the Lord is bringing up against you the strong and abundant water of the river, the king of the Assyrians and his glory, and he will go up on every valley of yours and walk on every wall of yours,

8 And he shall pass through Judah; he shall overflow and go over, he shall reach even to the neck; and the stretching out of his wings shall fill the breadth of your land, Oh Immanuel.

8 and he will take away from Judea any man who is able to lift his head or who is able to accomplish anything; his camp will fill the width of your country. God is with us. 8 and he will take away from Judea any man who is able to lift his head or who is able to accomplish anything; his camp will fill the width of your country. God is with us.

A Believing Remnant

9 Associate yourselves, Oh you people, and you shall be broken in pieces; and give ear, all you of far countries: gird yourselves, and you shall be broken in pieces; gird yourselves, and you shall be broken in pieces.

9 Be aware, nations, and be defeated; listen as far as the end of the earth; after being strong, be defeated; for if you become strong again, you shall be defeated again! 9 Be aware, nations, and be defeated; listen as far as the end of the earth; after being strong, be defeated; for if you become strong again, you shall be defeated again!

10 Take counsel together, and it shall come to nothing; speak the word, and it shall not stand; for God is with us.

10 And whatever advice you advise, the Lord will scatter it, and whatever word you speak, it will not remain with you, because the Lord God is with us. 10 And whatever advice you advise, the Lord will scatter it, and whatever word you speak, it will not remain with you, because the Lord God is with us.

11 For Yahweh spoke thus to me with a strong hand, and instructed me that I should not walk in the way of this people, saying,

11 Thus says the Lord, With a strong hand they keep refusing the conduct of the way of this people, saying, 11 Thus says the Lord, With a strong hand they keep refusing the conduct of the way of this people, saying,

12 Don’t say, A confederacy, to all them to whom this people shall say, A confederacy; neither fear you their fear, nor be afraid.

12 Never say “Hard!” for everything, whatever this people says is hard.
but don’t fear what it fears, neither be unsettled.
12 Never say “Hard!” for everything, whatever this people says is hard.
but don’t fear what it fears, neither be unsettled.

13 Sanctify Yahweh of armies himself; and let him be your fear, and let him be your dread.

13 Sanctify the Lord himself, and he himself will be your fear. 13 Sanctify the Lord himself, and he himself will be your fear.

14 And he shall be for a sanctuary; but for a stone of stumbling and for a rock of offence to both the houses of Israēl, for a gin and for a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem.

14 And if you are being confident in him, he will be a sanctuary for you, and you will not meet him as an obstacle stone or as a rock slide. But the house of Jakōb is in a trap, and those who sit in Ierousalem are in a pit. 14 And if you are being confident in him, he will be a sanctuary for you, and you will not meet him as an obstacle stone or as a rock slide. But the house of Jakōb is in a trap, and those who sit in Ierousalem are in a pit.

15 And many among them shall stumble, and fall, and be broken, and be snared, and be taken.

15 Therefore, many among them shall become powerless, and they shall fall and be crushed, and the men who are in safety shall approach and be captured. 15 Therefore, many among them shall become powerless, and they shall fall and be crushed, and the men who are in safety shall approach and be captured.

16 Bind up the testimony, seal the law among my disciples.

16 Then those who seal up the law shall become revealed so that they might not learn. 16 Then those who seal up the law shall become revealed so that they might not learn.

17 And I will wait on Yahweh, that hides his face from the house of Jacōb, and I will look for him.

17 And one shall say, “I will wait for God, who has turned away his face from the house of Jakōb, and I will be confident in him. 17 And one shall say, “I will wait for God, who has turned away his face from the house of Jakōb, and I will be confident in him.

18 Behold, I and the children whom Yahweh has given me are for signs and for wonders in Israēl from Yahweh of armies, which dwells in mount Zion.

18 Here I am and the children whom God has given me, and they shall become signs and wonders in Israēl from the Lord Sabaōth, who dwells on the mountain of Siōn.Spoil Soon, Plunder Swiftly. 18 Here I am and the children whom God has given me, and they shall become signs and wonders in Israēl from the Lord Sabaōth, who dwells on the mountain of Siōn.Spoil Soon, Plunder Swiftly.

19 And when they shall say to you, Seek to those who have familiar spirits, and to wizards that peep, and that mutter: should not a people seek to their God? For the living to the dead?

19 καὶ ἐὰν εἴπωσιν πρὸς ὑμᾶς ζητήσατε τοὺς ἀπὸ τῆς γῆς φωνοῦντας καὶ τοὺς ἐγγαστριμύθους, τοὺς κενολογοῦντας οἳ ἐκ τῆς κοιλίας φωνοῦσιν, οὐκ ἔθνος πρὸς θεὸν αὐτοῦ;
τί ἐκζητοῦσιν περὶ τῶν ζώντων τοὺς νεκρούς;
19 καὶ ἐὰν εἴπωσι πρὸς ὑμᾶς· ζητήσατε τοὺς ἐγγαστριμύθους καὶ τοὺς ἀπὸ τῆς γῆς φωνοῦντας, τοὺς κενολογοῦντας, οἳ ἐκ τῆς κοιλίας φωνοῦσιν, οὐχὶ ἔθνος πρὸς Θεὸν αὐτοῦ ἐκζητήσουσι;
τί ἐκζητοῦσι περὶ τῶν ζώντων τοὺς νεκρούς;
19 And if they say to you, “Seek those who utter sounds from the earth and the ventriloquists, the ones who talk emptily who utter sounds out of their bellies,” should not a nation be with its God? Why do they seek out the dead concerning the living? 19 And if they say to you, “Seek those who utter sounds from the earth and the ventriloquists, the ones who talk emptily who utter sounds out of their bellies,” should not a nation be with its God? Why do they seek out the dead concerning the living?

20 To the law and to the testimony: if they don’t speak according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.

20 For he has given a law as a help in order that they may not speak a word such as this one, concerning which there are no gifts to give. 20 For he has given a law as a help in order that they may not speak a word such as this one, concerning which there are no gifts to give.

21 And they shall pass through it, hardly bestead and hungry; and it will happen, that when they shall be hungry, they shall fret themselves, and curse their king and their God, and look upward.

21 And a harsh famine will come on you, and it shall be that when you become hungry, you will be grieved, and you will speak evil of your leader and your idol. And they will look up to heaven above, 21 And a harsh famine will come on you, and it shall be that when you become hungry, you will be grieved, and you will speak evil of your leader and your idol. And they will look up to heaven above,

22 And they shall look to the earth; and behold trouble and darkness, dimness of anguish; and they shall be driven to darkness.

22 and they will look on the earth below, and look! affliction and distress and darkness; difficult perplexity and darkness so that they cannot see. 22 and they will look on the earth below, and look! affliction and distress and darkness; difficult perplexity and darkness so that they cannot see. And the one who is in distress will not be perplexed for a season.
