Chapter 10
Woe to Unjust Legislators
| 1 Woe to those who write wickedness; for when they write, they write iniquity, 2 turning aside the judgment of the poor, plundering the justice of the needy among my people, so that widows are their prey and orphans their spoil. 3 And what will they do in the day of visitation? For your affliction shall come from afar. To whom will you flee for help? And where will you leave your glory, 4 so as not to fall into captivity? For all these things His anger is not turned away, but His hand is still raised high. |
Assyria: The Unwitting Instrument of God
| 5 Woe to the Assyrians! The rod of my anger and wrath is in their hands. 6 I will send my anger against a lawless nation, and I will command my people to take spoils and plunder, and to trample the cities and turn them into dust. 7 But he [the Assyrian king] did not intend it this way, nor has he reasoned so in his soul; rather, his mind will change, even to utterly destroy not a few nations. |
| 8 And if they should say to him, "You alone are ruler," 9 he will say: "Did I not take the region above Babylon and Calno, where the tower was built? And I took Arabia and Damascus and Samaria. 10 Just as I took these in my hand, I shall also take all the principalities—wail, you graven images in Jerusalem and in Samaria! 11 For just as I did to Samaria and her handmade things, so I will do also to Jerusalem and her idols." |
| 12 And it shall be, when the Lord has finished doing all things on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem, He will bring [judgment] upon the great mind, the ruler of the Assyrians, and upon the haughtiness of the glory of his eyes. 13 For he said: "By my strength I will act, and by the wisdom of my understanding I will remove the boundaries of nations and plunder their strength. I will shake inhabited cities, 14 and I will seize the whole world in my hand like a nest, and I will take them like abandoned eggs; and there is no one who shall escape me or speak against me." |
τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ | 15 Shall an ax be glorified without the one who chops with it? Or shall a saw be exalted without the one who pulls it? So it is if one should lift a rod or a staff. 16 But it shall not be so; instead, the Lord of Hosts shall send dishonor upon your honor, and a burning fire shall burn upon your glory. 17 And the light of Israel shall be for a fire, and He will sanctify him in a burning fire, and it shall devour the wood like grass. |
| 18 In that day the mountains and the hills and the forests shall be extinguished; it shall devour from soul to flesh. And he who flees shall be like one fleeing from a burning flame. 19 And those left behind from them shall be a [mere] number, and a child shall write them down. |
A Remnant Will Return
| 20 And it shall be in that day that the remnant of Israel shall no longer be added to, and those of Jacob who were saved shall no longer trust in those who wronged them; but they shall trust in the Holy God of Israel in truth. 21 And the remnant of Jacob shall turn to the Mighty God. 22 And though the people of Israel become as the sand of the sea, [only] their remnant shall be saved; for He is completing and cutting short a word in righteousness. 23 For God will perform a concise word (logon syntetmēmenon) in the whole world. |
The End of the Assyrian Threat
| 24 Therefore thus says the Lord of Hosts: "Do not fear, my people who dwell in Zion, because of the Assyrians; for he shall strike you with a rod. For I am bringing a plague upon you so that you may see the way of Egypt. 25 For yet a little while and the anger shall cease, but my wrath shall be against their counsel." 26 And God will stir up against them [a plague] according to the plague of Midian in a place of affliction, and His wrath shall be by the way of the sea, toward the way of Egypt. 27 And it shall be in that day, his fear shall be taken away from you and his yoke from your shoulder, and the yoke shall be destroyed from your shoulders. |
| 28 For he shall come to the city of Ai, and shall pass through to Megiddo, and in Michmash he will deposit his equipment. 29 And he shall pass through a ravine and come to Ai; fear shall seize Ramah, the city of Saul. 30 The daughter of Gallim shall flee; Laish shall hear, Anathoth shall hear! 31 Madmenah is dismayed, and the inhabitants of Gebim—32 encourage them today on the way to remain; with your hand encourage the mountain, the daughter of Zion, and the hills in Jerusalem. |
| 33 For behold, the Sovereign Lord of Hosts throws the glorious ones into confusion with might; and the high ones in their arrogance shall be crushed, and the lofty shall be humbled. 34 And the high ones shall fall by the sword, and Lebanon shall fall together with the high ones. |
