Chapter 1

NASTextRec

The Word Became Flesh

The word was in the beginning, and the word was with God, and the word was God. The word was in the beginning, and the word was with God, and the word was God.
This one was in the beginning with God. This one was in the beginning with God.
All things came into being through him, and apart from him not one thing came into being that has come into being. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
In him was life, and the life was the light of people. In him was life, and the life was the light of people.
The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness didn’t overcome it. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness didn’t overcome it.
This one came as a witness, to witness concerning the light, so that all might believe through him. This one came as a witness, to witness concerning the light, so that all might believe through him.
That one was not the light, but he came to testify about the Light. That one was not the light, but he came to testify about the Light.
That was the true light which, coming into the world, enlightens every person. That was the true light which, coming into the world, enlightens every person.
He was in the world, and the world came into being through him, and the world didn’t know him. He was in the world, and the world came into being through him, and the world didn’t know him.
He came to his own, and those who were his own didn’t receive him. He came to his own, and those who were his own didn’t receive him.
But as many as received him, to them he gave the authority to become children of God, to the ones who believe in his name, But as many as received him, to them he gave the authority to become children of God, to the ones who believe in his name,
And the word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw his glory, glory as of the unique one from the Father, full of grace and truth. And the word became flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we saw his glory, glory as of the unique one from the Father,) full of grace and truth.
Jōhn testified about him and cried out, saying, “This was he of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me has become before me, for he existed before me.’” Jōhn testified about him and cried out, saying, “This was he of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me has become before me, for he existed before me.’”
For of his fullness we have all received, even grace in exchange for grace. For of his fullness we have all received, even grace in exchange for grace.
For the Torah was given through Mōses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. For the Torah was given through Mōses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
No one has seen God at any time; the unique God who is in the chest of the Father, he has revealed him. No one has seen God at any time; the unique Son who is in the chest of the Father, he has revealed him.

Testimony of Jōhn the Baptist
(Mt 3.1‑12; Mk 1.2‑8; Lk 3.15‑17)

And he acknowledged and didn’t deny, but acknowledged, “I am not the Christ.” And he acknowledged and didn’t deny, but acknowledged, “I am not the Christ.”
1:21 καὶ ἠρώτησαν αὐτόν, τί οὖν;
σὺ Ἠλίας εἶ;
προφήτης εἶ σύ;
21 καὶ ἠρώτησαν αὐτόν, τί οὖν;
Ἠλίας εἶ σύ;
προφήτης εἶ σύ;
They asked him, “What then? Are you Ēlijah?” And he said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?”1 And he answered, “No.” They asked him, “What then? Are you Ēlijah?” And he said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?”1 And he answered, “No.”
1:22 εἶπαν οὖν αὐτῷ, τίς εἶ;
ἵνα ἀπόκρισιν δῶμεν τοῖς πέμψασιν ἡμᾶς· τί λέγεις περὶ σεαυτοῦ;
22 εἶπον οὖν αὐτῷ, τίς εἶ;
ἵνα ἀπόκρισιν δῶμεν τοῖς πέμψασιν ἡμᾶς· τί λέγεις περὶ σεαυτοῦ;
Then they said to him, “Who are you, so that we may give an answer to those who sent us? What do you say about yourself?” Then they said to him, “Who are you, so that we may give an answer to those who sent us? What do you say about yourself?”
He said, “I am a voice of one crying in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’1 just as Isaiah the prophet said.” He said, “I am a voice of one crying in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’1 just as Isaiah the prophet said.”
1:25 καὶ ἠρώτησαν αὐτὸν καὶ εἶπαν αὐτῷ, τί οὖν βαπτίζεις εἰ σὺ οὐκ εἶ Χριστὸς οὐδὲ Ἠλίας οὐδὲ προφήτης; 25 καὶ ἠρώτησαν αὐτόν, καὶ εἶπον αὐτῷ, τί οὖν βαπτίζεις, εἰ σὺ οὐκ εἶ Χριστός, οὔτε Ἠλίας, οὔτε προφήτης;
They asked him, and said to him, “Why then are you baptizing, if you are not the Christ, nor Ēlijah, nor the Prophet?” They asked him, and said to him, “Why then are you baptizing, if you are not the Christ, nor Ēlijah, nor the Prophet?”
Jōhn answered them saying, “I baptize in water, but among you stands One whom you don’t know. Jōhn answered them saying, “I baptize in water, but among you stands One whom you don’t know.
These things happened in Bethany beyond the Jordan, where Jōhn was baptizing. These things happened in Bēthabara beyond the Jordan, where Jōhn was baptizing.

The Lamb of God

This is he concerning whom I said, ‘A man comes after me who was before me, for he existed before me.’ This is he concerning whom I said, ‘A man comes after me who was before me, for he existed before me.’
I didn’t recognize him, but so that he might be revealed to Israēl, I came baptizing in water.” I didn’t recognize him, but so that he might be revealed to Israēl, I came baptizing in water.”
I didn’t recognize him, but he who sent me to baptize in water said to me, ‘That one upon whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining upon him, this is the one who baptizes in the Holy Spirit.’ I didn’t recognize him, but he who sent me to baptize in water said to me, ‘That one upon whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining upon him, this is the one who baptizes in the Holy Spirit.’
I myself have seen, and have testified that this is the Son of God.” I myself have seen, and have testified that this is the Son of God.”

The First Disciples

and he looked at Jesus as he walked, and said, “Look, the Lamb of God!” and he looked at Jesus as he walked, and said, “Look, the Lamb of God!”
1:38 στραφεὶς δὲ Ἰησοῦς καὶ θεασάμενος αὐτοὺς ἀκολουθοῦντας λέγει αὐτοῖς, τί ζητεῖτε;
οἱ δὲ εἶπαν αὐτῷ, ῥαββί, λέγεται μεθερμηνευόμενον διδάσκαλε, ποῦ μένεις;
38 στραφεὶς δὲ Ἰησοῦς, καὶ θεασάμενος αὐτοὺς ἀκολουθοῦντας, λέγει αὐτοῖς, τί ζητεῖτε;
οἱ δὲ εἶπον αὐτῷ, ῥαββί, ( λέγεται ἑρμηνευόμενον, διδάσκαλε,) ποῦ μένεις;
And Jesus turned and saw them following, and said to them, “What do you seek?” They said to him, “Rabbi (which translated means Teacher), where are you staying?” And Jesus turned and saw them following, and said to them, “What do you seek?” They said to him, “Rabbi (which translated means Teacher), where are you staying?”
He said to them, “Come, and you will see.” Then they came and saw where he was staying; and they stayed with him that day, for it was about the tenth hour.1 He said to them, “Come, and you will see.” Then they came and saw where he was staying; and they stayed with him that day, for it was about the tenth hour.1
14:00 pm

He brought him to Jesus. When looking at him, Jesus said, “You are Simōn the son of Jōhn; you shall be called Cēphas” (which is translated Peter). He brought him to Jesus. When looking at him, Jesus said, “You are Simōn the son of Jōnah; you shall be called Cēphas” (which is translated Peter).

Calling of Philip and Nathanael

46 καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Ναθαναήλ, ἐκ Ναζαρὲτ δύναταί τι ἀγαθὸν εἶναι;

Jesus saw Nathanaēl coming to him, and said concernng him, “Look, an Israēlite truly, in whom there is no deceit!” Jesus saw Nathanaēl coming to him, and said concernng him, “Look, an Israēlite truly, in whom there is no deceit!”
1:48 λέγει αὐτῷ Ναθαναήλ, πόθεν με γινώσκεις;
48 λέγει αὐτῷ Ναθαναήλ, πόθεν με γινώσκεις;

Nathanaēl answered him, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the King of Israēl.” Nathanaēl answered and said to him, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the King of Israēl.”
1:50 ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ, ὅτι εἶπόν σοι ὅτι εἶδόν σε ὑποκάτω τῆς συκῆς, πιστεύεις;
50 ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ, ὅτι εἶπόν σοι, εἶδόν σε ὑποκάτω τῆς συκῆς, πιστεύεις;
Jesus answered and said to him, “Do you believe because I said to you that I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than these.” Jesus answered and said to him, “Do you believe because I said to you that I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than these.”
