Praise for God’s Justice
9.1 I will give thanks to You, O Lord, with my whole heart; I will recount all Your wonders. 9.2 I will be glad and exult in You; I will sing to Your name, O Most High.
6 τοῦ ἐχθροῦ ἐξέλιπον αἱ ῥομφαῖαι εἰς τέλος, καὶ πόλεις καθεῖλες· ἀπώλετο τὸ μνημόσυνον αὐτῶν μετ' ἤχους, 9.3 Because my enemy was turned back; they shall grow weak and perish from Your face. 9.4 For You have maintained my judgment and my cause; You sat on the throne, You who judge righteousness. 9.5 You rebuked the nations, and the impious one perished; You blotted out their name forever, even forever and ever. 9.6 The swords of the enemy have failed utterly, and You have destroyed cities; their memory has perished with a noise.
9.7 But the Lord remains forever; He has prepared His throne for judgment. 9.8 And He Himself will judge the world in righteousness; He will judge the peoples in uprightness. 9.9 And the Lord became a refuge for the needy, a helper in well-timed moments, in affliction. 9.10 And let those who know Your name hope in You, for You have not forsaken those who seek You out, O Lord.
The Cry of the Oppressed
9.11 Sing to the Lord who dwells in Zion; proclaim His practices among the nations. 9.12 For He who seeks out their blood has remembered; He has not forgotten the cry of the needy.
9.13 Have mercy on me, O Lord; see my humiliation [brought] by my enemies, You who lift me up from the gates of death; 9.14 so that I may declare all Your praises in the gates of the daughter of Zion; I will exult in Your salvation.
20 κατάστησον, κύριε, νομοθέτην ἐπ' αὐτούς, γνώτωσαν ἔθνη ὅτι ἄνθρωποί εἰσιν· διάψαλμα.2 9.15 The nations were stuck fast in the destruction they made; in this very trap which they hid, their foot was caught. 9.16 The Lord is known for executing judgments; in the works of his own hands the sinner was caught. Song of the Pause. 9.17 Let the sinners be turned back to Hades, even all the nations that forget God. 9.18 For the poor shall not be forgotten forever; the patience of the needy shall not perish forever. 9.19 Arise, O Lord, let not man prevail; let the nations be judged before You. 9.20 Appoint, O Lord, a lawgiver over them; let the nations know that they are but men. Pause.
The Arrogance of the Wicked
9.21 [MT=10:1] Why, O Lord, have You stood far off? Why do You overlook us in well-timed moments, in affliction? 9.22 [MT=10:2] While the impious one acts with pride, the poor man is set on fire; they are caught in the counsels which they devise. 9.23 [MT=10:3] For the sinner is praised in the desires of his soul, and the unrighteous man is blessed. 9.24 [MT=10:4] The sinner has provoked the Lord; according to the abundance of his wrath, he will not seek [Him] out; God is not before him.
9.25 [MT=10:5] His ways are profaned at all times; Your judgments are taken away from his face; he will lord it over all his enemies. 9.26 [MT=10:6] For he said in his heart, "I shall not be shaken from generation to generation without evil." 9.27 [MT=10:7] His mouth is full of cursing and bitterness and deceit; under his tongue are toil and pain. 9.28 [MT=10:8] He sits in ambush with the rich in secret places, to kill the innocent; his eyes look intently upon the needy.
9.29 [MT=10:9] He lies in wait in secret like a lion in his den; he lies in wait to snatch the poor, to snatch the poor by dragging him in. 9.30 [MT=10:10] In his trap he will humble him; he will stoop and fall while he lords it over the needy. 9.31 [MT=10:11] For he said in his heart, "God has forgotten; He has turned away His face so as not to see to the end."
A Final Appeal for Justice
35 [MT=10:15] σύντριψον τὸν βραχίονα τοῦ ἁμαρτωλοῦ καὶ πονηροῦ, ζητηθήσεται ἡ ἁμαρτία αὐτοῦ καὶ οὐ μὴ εὑρεθῇ [δι' αὐτήν] . 9.32 [MT=10:12] Arise, O Lord God, let Your hand be lifted up; do not forget the needy. 9.33 [MT=10:13] Why has the impious one provoked God? For he said in his heart, "He will not seek it out." 9.34 [MT=10:14] You see, for You observe toil and wrath, to deliver them into Your hands; to You the poor man has been left; You were the helper of the orphan. 9.35 [MT=10:15] Break the arm of the sinner and the wicked; his sin shall be sought out and not be found [because of its destruction].
9.36 [MT=10:16] The Lord shall reign forever, even forever and ever; you nations shall perish from His land. 9.37 [MT=10:17] The Lord has heard the desire of the needy; Your ear has attended to the preparation of their heart; 9.38 [MT=10:18] to judge for the orphan and the humble, so that man may no longer boast upon the earth.
