Israēl’s Prophecy concerning His Sons

1 And Jacōb called to his sons, and said, “Gather yourselves together, that I may tell you what shall befall you in the last days.

1 Then Jacōb summoned his sons and said. “Gather together in order that I may tell you what will happen to you at the last of the days. 1 Then Jacōb summoned his sons and said. “Gather together in order that I may tell you what will happen to you at the last of the days.

2 Gather yourselves together, and hear, you sons of Jacōb; and listen to Israēl your father.

2 Assemble, and hear, Oh sons of Jacōb; hear Israēl your father. 2 Assemble, and hear, Oh sons of Jacōb; hear Israēl your father.

3 Reuben, you are my firstborn, my might, and the beginning of my strength, the excellency of dignity, and the excellency of power.

3 Rhoubēn, you are my firstborn, my might and beginning of my children, hard to tolerate and hard, self-centered. 3 Rhoubēn, you are my firstborn, my might and beginning of my children, hard to tolerate and hard, self-centered.

4 Unstable as water, you shall not excel; because you went up to your father’s bed; then you defiled it. He went up to my couch.

4 You became arrogant like water; don’t boil over. For you went up on your father’s bed; then you defiled the couch where you went up. 4 You became arrogant like water; don’t boil over. For you went up on your father’s bed; then you defiled the couch where you went up.

5 Simeon and Levi are brothers; instruments of cruelty are in their habitations.

5 Symeōn and Levi are brothers; they fulfilled injustice by their action. 5 Symeōn and Levi are brothers; they fulfilled injustice by their action.

6 Oh my soul, don’t come into their secret; to their assembly, my honour, isn’t united; for in their anger they killed a man, and in their self-will they dug down a wall.

6 May my soul not enter into their plan, and may my inward parts not join in their conspiracy, because in their anger they killed men and in their passion they hamstrung a bull. 6 May my soul not enter into their plan, and may my inward parts not join in their conspiracy, because in their anger they killed men and in their passion they hamstrung a bull.

7 Cursed be their anger, for it was fierce; and their wrath, for it was cruel. I will divide them in Jacōb, and scatter them in Israēl.

7 Cursed be their anger, because it is selfish, and their wrath, because it is inflexible. I will divide them in Jacōb and scatter them in Israēl. 7 Cursed be their anger, because it is selfish, and their wrath, because it is inflexible. I will divide them in Jacōb and scatter them in Israēl.

8 Judah, you are he whom your brothers shall praise: your hand shall be in the neck of your enemies; your father’s children shall bow down before you.

8 Jouda, may your brothers praise you; may your hands be on the back of your enemies; your father’s sons shall do obeisance to you. 8 Jouda, may your brothers praise you; may your hands be on the back of your enemies; your father’s sons shall do obeisance to you.

9 Judah is a lion’s whelp. From the prey, my son, you are gone up; he stooped down, he couched as a lion, and as an old lion; who shall rouse him up?

9 σκύμνος λέοντος Ἰούδα· ἐκ βλαστοῦ υἱέ μου ἀνέβης ἀναπεσὼν ἐκοιμήθης ὡς λέων καὶ ὡς σκύμνος· τίς ἐγερεῖ αὐτόν; 9 σκύμνος λέοντος Ἰούδα· ἐκ βλαστοῦ, υἱέ μου, ἀνέβης· ἀναπεσὼν ἐκοιμήθης ὡς λέων καὶ ὡς σκύμνος· τίς ἐγερεῖ αὐτόν;
9 Jouda, you are a lion’s cub; from a shoot, my son, you went up. When you reclined, you slept like a lion and like a cub. Who will awaken him? 9 Jouda, you are a lion’s cub; from a shoot, my son, you went up. When you reclined, you slept like a lion and like a cub. Who will awaken him?

10 The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come; and to him shall the gathering of the people be.

10 A ruler shall not die out from Jouda and one who leads from his thighs until the things stored up for him come, and he is the expectation of nations. 10 A ruler shall not die out from Jouda and one who leads from his thighs until the things stored up for him come, and he is the expectation of nations.

11 Binding his foal to the vine, and his donkey’s colt to the choice vine; he washed his garments in wine, and his clothes in the blood of grapes.

11 Tying his foal to a grapevine and his donkey’s foal to the vine-tendril, he shall wash his robe in wine and his cloak in the blood of a bunch of grapes; 11 Tying his foal to a grapevine and his donkey’s foal to the vine-tendril, he shall wash his robe in wine and his cloak in the blood of a bunch of grapes;

12 His eyes shall be red with wine, and his teeth white with milk.

12 his eyes are glazed from wine, and his teeth are more white than milk. 12 his eyes are gladdening from wine, and his teeth are more white than milk.

13 Zebulun shall dwell at the haven of the sea; and he shall be for a haven of ships; and his border shall be to Zidon.

13 Zaboulōn by the sea shall settle, and he shall be near a haven of ships, and he shall extend as far as Sidōn. 13 Zaboulōn by the sea shall settle, and he shall be near a haven of ships, and he shall extend as far as Sidōn.

14 Issachar is a strong donkey couching down between two burdens.

14 Issachar desired the good, resting between the allotments; 14 Issachar desired the good, resting between the allotments;

15 And he saw that rest was good, and the land that it was pleasant; and bowed his shoulder to carry, and became a servant to tribute.

15 and after he saw the resting place (that it was good) and the land (that it was rich), he subjected his shoulder to labour and became a farmer. 15 and after he saw the resting place (that it was good) and the land (that it was rich), he subjected his shoulder to labour and became a farmer.

16 Dan shall judge his people, as one of the tribes of Israēl.

16 Dan shall judge his people, as also one tribe in Israēl. 16 Dan shall judge his people, as also one tribe in Israēl.

17 Dan shall be a serpent by the way, an adder in the path, that bites the horse heels, so that his rider shall fall backward.

17 And let Dan become a snake on the road lying in ambush on the path, biting a horse’s heel, and the rider shall fall backwards, 17 And let Dan become a snake on the road lying in ambush on the path, biting a horse’s heel, and the rider shall fall backwards,

18 I have waited for your salvation, Oh Yahweh!

18 I am waiting for the salvation of the Lord. 18 I am waiting for the salvation of the Lord.

19 Gad, a troop shall overcome him; but he shall overcome at the last.

19 Gad, a plundering gang shall plunder him; but he shall plunder them on foot. 19 Gad, a plundering gang shall plunder him; but he shall plunder them on foot.

20 Out of Asher his bread shall be fat, and he shall yield royal dainties.

20 Asēr, his bread is rich, and he shall give delight to rulers. 20 Asēr, his bread is rich, and he shall give delight to rulers.

21 Naphtali is a hind let loose; he gives good words.

21 Nephthali is a spreading stem, bestowing beauty on its produce. 21 Nephthalim is a spreading stem, bestowing beauty on its produce.

22 Joseph is a fruitful bough, even a fruitful bough by a well; whose branches run over the wall.

22 Jōsēph is a grown son, an enviable grown son, my youngest son; return to me; 22 Jōsēph is a grown son, an enviable grown son, my youngest son; return to me;

23 The archers have sorely grieved him, and shot at him, and hated him.

23 one at whom, while deliberating, they were vilifying, and master archers were hostile to him. 23 one at whom, while deliberating, they were vilifying, and master archers were hostile to him.

24 But his bow abode in strength, and the arms of his hands were made strong by the hands of the mighty God of Jacōb; (from there is the shepherd, the stone of Israēl).

24 And their bow was broken with force, and the sinews of the arms of their hands were relaxed because of the mighty hand of Jacōb; from there the one who strengthened Israēl, 24 And their bow was broken with force, and the sinews of the arms of their hands were relaxed because of the mighty hand of Jacōb; from there the one who strengthened Israēl, on the part of your father’s god,

25 Even by the God of your father, who shall help you; and by the Almighty, who shall bless you with blessings of heaven above, blessings of the deep that lies under, blessings of the breasts, and of the womb.

25 on the part of your father’s god, and my God helped you, and he blessed you with a blessing of heaven above and a blessing of earth containing everything, for the sake of a blessing of breasts and of womb, 25 and my God helped you, and he blessed you with a blessing of heaven above and a blessing of earth containing everything, for the sake of a blessing of breasts and of womb,

26 The blessings of your father have prevailed above the blessings of my ancestors to the utmost bound of the everlasting hills; they shall be on the head of Joseph, and on the crown of the head of him who was separate from his brothers.

26 a blessing of your father and of your mother; it has prevailed, in blessings, over steady mountains, and, in blessings, over eternal mounds; they shall be on the head of Jōsēph and on the top of the brothers whom he led. 26 a blessing of your father and of your mother; it has prevailed, in blessings, over steady mountains, and, in blessings, over eternal mounds; they shall be on the head of Jōsēph and on the top of the brothers whom he led.

27 Benjamin shall act as a ravenous wolf; in the morning he shall devour the prey, and at night he shall divide the spoil.”

27 Benjamin is a rapacious wolf; in the early morning he shall still be devouring, and at evening he shall distribute food.” 27 Benjamin is a rapacious wolf; in the early morning he shall still be devouring, and at evening he shall distribute food.”

28 All these are the twelve tribes of Israēl; and this is what their father spoke to them, and blessed them; everyone according to his blessing he blessed them.

28 All these are the twelve sons of Jacōb, and their father spoke these things to them, and he blessed them; each one according to his blessing he blessed them. 28 All these are the twelve sons of Jacōb, and their father spoke these things to them, and he blessed them; each one according to his blessing he blessed them.

29 And he charged them, and said to them, “I am to be gathered to my people: bury me with my fathers in the cave that is in the field of Ephron the Hittite,

29 And he said to them, “I am added to my people; you shall bury me with my fathers in the cave, which is in the field of Ephrōn the Chettite, 29 And he said to them, “I am added to my people; you shall bury me with my fathers in the cave, which is in the field of Ephrōn the Chettite,

30 In the cave that is in the field of Machpelah, which is before Mamre, in the land of Canaan, which Abraham bought with the field of Ephron the Hittite for a possession of a burial place.

31 There they buried Abraham and Sarah his wife; there they buried Isaac and Rebekah his wife; and there I buried Leah.

31 There they buried Abraham and his wife Sarra, and there they buried Isaac and his wife Rhebekka, and there they buried Leia, 31 There they buried Abraham and his wife Sarra, and there they buried Isaac and his wife Rhebekka, and there they buried Leia,

32 in the possession of the field and the cave that is in it from the sons of Chet.” 32 in the possession of the field and the cave that is in it from the sons of Chet.”

33 And when Jacōb had made an end of commanding his sons, he gathered up his feet into the bed, and yielded up the spirit, and was gathered to his people.

33 And Jacōb ceased commanding his sons, and after he lifted his feet onto the bed, he subsided and was added to his people. 33 And Jacōb ceased commanding his sons, and after he lifted his feet onto the bed, he subsided and was added to his people.
